Hot Toys MMS270 Sleepy Hollow: 1/6th Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane 12" Collectible Figure

You can order this from Sideshow Collectibles

The story of Sleepy Hollow had been a popular American fiction since its first publication in 1820. In 1999, master storyteller Tim Burton weaves an eerie, enchanting version of the classic tale of horror starring Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane, an eccentric investigator determined to stop the murderous Headless Horseman.

In celebration of the “The World of Tim Burton” exhibition in Japan that begins this November, Hot Toys is delighted to present the Sleepy Hollow: 1/6th scale Ichabod Crane Collectible Figure!

The movie-accurate Ichabod Crane Collectible Figure is specially crafted based on the image of Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane in the film which features a newly developed head sculpt, elegantly-tailored costume, and a number of highly detailed accessories which Ichabod Crane has used in the movie.

Hot Toys MMS217 The Lone Ranger: 1/6 scale Johnny Depp as Tonto Collectible Figure Review2

continued from previous post...

You can order this from Sideshow Collectibles

Having already done a first part review earlier, I wanted to go into the nice details that come with this movie-accurate Hot Toys MMS217 (Movie Masterpiece Series) The Lone Ranger: 1/6th scale Tonto Collectible Figure. Tonto features: Authentic and detailed fully realized likeness of Johnny Depp as Tonto head sculpt with real-like facial expression, detailed wrinkles, face paint and gesture as seen in The Lone Ranger. Includes real fabric hair implantation in black long straight hair with tribal accessories plus detailed crow and bandana sculpture on head.

Johnny Depp's Tonto character wears black-and-white face paint and a deceased crow on his head. According to Depp, the inspiration for the costume was a painting entitled I Am Crow by Kirby Sattler. I wasn't used to the look of this Tonto as he was definitely different from all the other Tontos I've come to know. I guess Depp was trying to take the character to another level just like what he did with the pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (see my post HERE where I covered the various 1/6 scale Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow head sculpts that have been released by Hot Toys)

Johnny Depp's Tonto costume is made up of: One black and bronze-colored tribal necklace, One leather-like black belt, One multi-colored belt, One orange-colored belt, One pair of brown pants with pouch and tribal decorations, One pair of brown moccasins. He also has on him One brown and white tribal armband, One white and bronze-colored bracelet, One bronze-colored bracelet. Weapons: One dagger with sheath, Two axes, One revolver. Unfortunately, he doesn't come with a trigger hand for holding the revolver even though he comes with seven interchangeable hands.

Review 1: Hot Toys MMS217 The Lone Ranger: 1/6th Johnny Depp as Tonto Collectible Figure

This was part of my June haul :) see my post HERE

You can order this from Sideshow Collectibles

The Lone Ranger is a 2013 American action western film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films and directed by Gore Verbinski. Based on the radio series of the same name, the film stars Johnny Depp as Tonto, the narrator of the events, and Armie Hammer as John Reid (The Lone Ranger). It relates Tonto's memories of the duo's earliest efforts to subdue the immoral actions of the corrupt and bring justice in the American Old West. It is the first theatrical film featuring the Lone Ranger and Tonto characters in more than 32 years.

It was a box office bomb! Critics praised the acting performances, western style, but criticized the long length and lack of originality. Charlie McCollum of the San Jose Mercury News wrote, "In the end, The Lone Ranger is one hot mess — an entertaining one, to be sure, but still a mess."

That aside, we have Johnny Depp as Tonto. He seems to pop up as part of Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series collectible figure rather often. Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark / Iron Man have also been produced a lot of times by Hot Toys but that's always as Tony Stark / Iron Man (one of Hot Toys' cash cow). Johnny Depp has appeared as different characters each time - as Captain Jack Sparrow (three times), as Edward Scissorhands, as Sweeney Todd, and now as Tonto. Medicom Toys has also released 1/6 scale versions of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Ichabod Crane, Sweeney Todd and Mad Hatter.

June 2014 Haul - Mostly Hot Toys figures: 1966 Batman and Robin, Tonto, Iron Patriot (die-cast)

June 2014 haul so far has been mostly Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series (MMS) 12-inch collectible figures: Hot Toys "Batman (1966)" 1/6 scale Adam West as Bruce Wayne / Batman Collectible Figure, Hot Toys "Batman (1966)" 1/6 scale Burt Ward as Dick Grayson / Robin Collectible Figure, Hot Toys "The Lone Ranger" 1/6 scale Johnny Depp as Tonto Collectible Figure, Hot Toys "Iron Man 3" 1/6th scale Iron Patriot 12-inch Collectible Figure and Super Duck C006 Racing Suit.

Being a big fan of Batman growing up, the 1960s Batman TV series certainly played a big part in sealing in the love for the DC Comics character. It didn't matter that the show was campy and I was watching re-runs, as kids we all loved it. Just seeing Batman and Robin in costume and fighting crime in live action was exciting, as if the two dimensional comic book characters sprang to life and was actually living and breathing action heroes. There has never been 12-inch figures made of the dynamic duo until now. I'm really glad it's Hot Toys that got the license to produce and release these 1966 Batman figures because coming from Hot Toys, you know that quality is assured and these will look GREAT!

Incoming: Hot Toys MMS217 The Lone Ranger: 1/6 Johnny Depp as Tonto Collectible Figure

Eccentric roles are Johnny Depp’s specialty. In Disney’s The Lone Ranger, Johnny Depp has given an interesting performance as the peculiar Native American Tonto. Despite their initial differences, Tonto has partnered up with his “Kemo Sabe”, the Lone Ranger, and rode together in an adventure to bring justice in the Old West.

The movie-accurate Tonto Collectible Figure is specially crafted based on the image of Johnny Depp as Tonto in the movie which features a detailed head sculpt with face paint, real fabric hair, weapons and a number of finely-made tribal accessories.

Hot Toys MMS217 (Movie Masterpiece Series) The Lone Ranger: 1/6th scale Tonto Collectible Figure special features: Authentic and detailed fully realized likeness of Johnny Depp as Tonto in The Lone Ranger. Head sculpt with real-like facial expression, detailed wrinkles, face paint and gesture. Real fabric hair implantation in black long straight hair with tribal accessories. Detailed crow and bandana sculpture on head. Approximately 30 cm tall TrueType body with over 30 points of articulation and tattoos. Is the HeadPlay Johnny a good representation of Johnny Depp as "Public Enemies" John Dillinger?

Since Johnny Depp as John Dillinger has come up recently (see earlier post HERE), let's take a look at another 1/6 scale head sculpt of Depp as Dillinger that was done by HeadPlay and released some time ago. HeadPlay released a bunch of 1/6 scale head sculpts a while back (see my posts HERE, HERE and HERE) but they have gone all quiet since. I picked up a few of their head sculpts and this was one of them. This is the HeadPlay Johnny version and he does bear a resemblance to Johnny Depp as he is seen in "Public Enemies", a film based on the exploits of John Dillinger, a 1930s bank robber.

This is the HeadPlay 1/6 scale Johnny head sculpt with the complete outfit from Heroic's 12-inch Bank Robber that was released in 2010 (see the full review HERE). I also switched the bodies because the body Heroic used for their Bank robber figure was too bulky and had a large chest and wider shoulders which wouldn't fit this HeadPlay head sculpt. Incoming: DID 1/6 scale 1930s Chicago Gangster is Johnny Depp as Dillinger in Public Enemies?

Public Enemies is a 2009 American biographical-crime film directed by Michael Mann and written by Mann, Ronan Bennett and Ann Biderman. It is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough's non-fiction book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34. Set during the Great Depression, the film chronicles the final years of the notorious bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) as he is pursued by FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), and his relationship with Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard), as well as Purvis' pursuit of Dillinger associates and fellow criminals Homer Van Meter (Stephen Dorff) and Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham).

This is DID's new preview of their next release - a 1/6th scale 1930s Chicago Gangster "John" with obvious reference to Johnny Depp's John Dillinger character as seen in "Public Enemies"

The 1/6 scale head sculpt of 1930s Chicago Gangster "John" is pretty good in likeness to Johnny Depp in some angles and not so in others but overall, the stitching and make of the striped suit is superb! The miniature Tommy gun (Thompson submachine gun, caliber .45) is excellent, as is the violin case used for storing it - scroll down to see the pictures :)

"Ahoy, me mateys!" A look at Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean 12-inch collectible figures

Having seen three of the Hot Toys Captain Jack Sparrow heads in the previous post, it's time to look at the other 1/6 scale pirate figures that Hot Toys has put out and released over the years. Pirates of the Caribbean is a series of fantasy-adventure films directed by Gore Verbinski (1–3) and Rob Marshall (4), written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The films started with their first release on the big screen in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. After the success of the first film, Walt Disney Pictures revealed that a trilogy was in the works. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was released three years later in 2006. The sequel proved successful, breaking records worldwide the day of its premiere. In the end, it earned $1,066,179,725 at the worldwide box office, becoming the fourth and fastest film (at the time) to reach this amount.

C'mere, me beauties. Let's take a good look at ya!

The third film in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, was released in 2007. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, released on May 20, 2011. It succeeded in grossing more than $1 billion, becoming the eighth and fourth-fastest film to achieve this. So far, the film franchise has grossed $3.72 billion worldwide and it is the only franchise with two films that reached $1 billion worldwide. In July 2011, Johnny Depp confirmed he was closing in on a deal for a fifth installment and that the franchise wouldn't be going ahead without Depp's participation. [source: wiki]

Comparing Hot Toys DX06 Captain Jack Sparrow head sculpt with the other earlier released heads

This is the latest released Hot Toys MMS DX06 "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" Captain Jack Sparrow (the ever brilliant Johnny Depp) 1/6 scale head sculpt :) From what I've seen and read, the DX06 Captain Jack Sparrow is SHORT i.e. he's a much smaller figure than all the other 1/6 scale figures which are about 12 inches tall. DX06 Jack is only slightly taller than Medicom's puny Jack Sparrow action figure :( and wouldn't be able to stand beside the rest of the other Hot Toys "Pirates of the Caribbean" figures because he is almost a dwarf and would fit better with the hobbits from the Lord of the Rings or the Jawas from Star Wars. SIGH! I don't like when that happens. If there's already a scale established, stick to it. It's better for the figures to look good together than to have one figure stand way shorter than the rest when he's not supposed to. Hot Toys DX06 Jack Sparrow figure is supposedly based on Johnny Depp's actual height of 5'9" and the original version would have put him at 6'4" but the problem with being that accurate is: DX Jack is now SHORTER than the rest :(

So I only got the DX06 Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow 1/6 scale head sculpt in order to plonk it onto the original Hot Toys released Jack Sparrow figure instead. Don't really care much for the other items in the DX06 box set, just wanted the Jack Sparrow head. So the picture you see above is the 2007 released Hot Toys "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)" 1/6 scale Jack Sparrow (more pictures HERE) with 2012 released DX06 Jack Sparrow head. Not a bad fit IMHO Scroll down to see the other Hot Toys Jack Sparrow head sculpts for comparison.

Hot Toys 1/6 Edward Scissorhands 12-inch collectible figure REVIEW

Halloween (or Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday observed on October 31, which commonly includes activities such as trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. Celebrated primarily but not exclusively in English speaking countries, it is popular among both children and adults alike. Much of its appeal comes from its inclusive, secular nature and as well as the creativity and freedom of expression it promotes.

Since it's Halloween today, I guess it's appropriate to revisit a post published earlier on April 20, 2009 :)

This is Hot Toys MMS-82 Movie Masterpiece Series 1/6 scale fully poseable action figure of Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands from the movie of the same name, directed by none other than Tim Burton, most famous for his dark and often quirky films, such as Beetle Juice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, his reinvention of Batman and the sequel Batman Returns, Mars Attacks, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride and most recently, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Johnny Depp is in seven of his films and Burton's wife Helena Bonham Carter has been in his last six films.

Medicom Sleepy Hollow 1:6 Ichabod Crane PREVIEW

It seems like someone at Medicom office in Japan has a thing for Johnny Depp because that person has managed to convince the company to produce and release a string of 1:6 scale 12-inch figures based on the American actor and musician known for his portrayals of offbeat, eccentric characters such as Edward Scissorhands (although Hot Toys version looks better IMHO), Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series (Hot Toys released at least two of them too), Willy Wonka in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)", "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)", Mad Hatter from "Alice in Wonderland (2010)" (there is going to be two versions) and now Ichabod Crane from "Sleepy Hollow".

Sleepy Hollow is a 1999 American period horror film directed by Tim Burton. The story centers on police constable Ichabod Crane (played by the ever magnificent Johnny Depp) sent from New York City to investigate a series of murders in the village Sleepy Hollow by a mysterious Headless Horseman.

"OK, boys; let's go make a withdrawal"

Here's Heroic 1/6 scale Bank Robber (reviewed in the previous post) with his gang of bank robbers. There aren't that many 12-inch Prohibition Era (1930s) figures as it is and this latest offering by Heroic based loosely on Johnny Depp as notorious Depression-era bank robber (and beloved folk hero) John Dillinger in "Public Enemies" stands with his gang. Twilight Magic Works released the Cigar smoking gangster John from the Chicago Gang and Louie from the Napoli Gang in the year 2000. The Colt 1921 Thompson Submachine Gun or "Tommy gun" seems to be the favorite weapon of choice.

Louie from the Napoli Gang (more pictures HERE)

Cigar smoking gangster John (link HERE for more pictures)

Heroic 1/6 scale Bank Robber with more bank robbers except he seems to have time traveled to 1995 and joined Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) as he prepares to rob banks in "Heat", a 1995 American crime film written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer.

Neil McCauley (De Niro) is an ex-con and expert thief who has centered his life around the creed "Do not allow anything into your life which you cannot walk out on in thirty seconds flat if you spot the heat around the corner."

This attire (suit) is worn by McCauley when he and his crew rob a bank successfully only to have the police surround them when they exit. A chaotic, violent shoot-out then erupts in the busy downtown Los Angeles boulevard, causing mayhem.

More pictures posted HERE

In the beginning of the film, Neil McCauley (De Niro) and his crew, including compulsive gambler Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) and ex-con turned family man Michael Cheritto (Tom Sizemore) take part in an elaborate robbery of an armored car. They escape with US$1.6 million in bearer bonds from Malibu Equity Investments, a shell company that launders off-shore drug accounts.

Heroic 1/6 scale Bank Robber REVIEW

"Public Enemies" is a 2009 American crime film co-written and directed by Michael Mann. Set during the Great Depression, it focuses on the true story of Bureau of Investigation agent Melvin Purvis's (Christian Bale) attempts to stop criminals John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum).

And from Heroic comes this 1/6 scale 12-inch tall Bank Robber figure that is loosely based on Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. The exploits of Dillinger and his gang, along with those of other criminals of the Great Depression such as Bonnie and Clyde and Ma Barker, dominated the attention of the American press and its readers during what is sometimes referred to as the public enemy era (1931–1935), a period which led to the development of the modern, more sophisticated Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Heroic Bank Robber comes dressed in 1/6 scale attire including basic white, button-down long-sleeve shirt, tie, suspenders, pants with chain and dress shoes.

John Dillinger: "We're having too good a time today. We ain't thinking about tomorrow."

Close-ups of the Heroic Bank Robber head sculpt

He also has a rather nice black leather-looking vest worn over his shirt.

Check out those really fancy shoes. These bank robbers dress really well.

Last but not least, there's the plaid square pattern long, black and double-breasted overcoat. There's also the hat but let's just put that away and not go there. The less said, the better.

In "Public Enemies", John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) carries two Colt M1911A1 pistols kept in a leather cross-draw shoulder holster rig throughout the film, rarely firing them. Heroic's Bank Robber has only one Colt M1911A1 pistol and a standard shoulder holster meant for it.

Here's Heroic 1/6 scale Bank Robber all dressed to rob a bank

Besides being very well-dressed bank robbers, they were also very well armed. Depp as Dillinger has a Colt 1921 Thompson Submachine Gun.

John Dillinger: "You wanna know if we're armed? We're armed."

Colt M1921AC Thompson Submachine Gun ("Tommy Gun") with 30-round magazine. John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and some of his gangsters, notably "Baby Face" Nelson (Stephen Graham), and FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) use Thompson Submachine Guns throughout the film.

John Dillinger: "The only thing that's important is where somebody's going."
Billie Frechette: "Where are you going?"
John Dillinger: "Anywhere I want."
