The Special Air Service (SAS) is the British Army's most renowned Special Forces unit. The SAS can trace its existence back to 1941 when British Army volunteers conducted raids behind enemy lines in the North African Campaign of World War II. Currently the unit undertakes a number of roles including covert reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, direct action and hostage rescue.
Much of the information and actions regarding the SAS is highly classified, and is not commented on by the British government or the Ministry of Defence due to the sensitivity of their operations.
From the moment several black-clad figures appeared on the balconies of the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980, the Special Air Service became 'celebrities' both at home and overseas earning them the reputation as the worlds most elite Special Force. The Regiment is also famous for its motto “Who Dares Wins”.
An exclusive version only available at Green Wolf Gear, this 1/6th scale SAS CRW Assaulter figure is similar to the one posted earlier on this toy blog (pics HERE).

July 2014 haul: A Dead Cosmonaut (3A), Green Beret (Lt Falcon) and SAS: Who Dares Wins!
July is almost over and I haven't got much to show for it. I guess you could say July was a slow month, at least for me. I only got the ThreeA (3A) 1/6 scale Adventure Kartel Dead Cosmonaut Golovorez 12.5-inch figure, Sideshow Collectibles 2012 San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive (SDCC) 1/6 scale G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Lt. Falcon 12-inch Green Beret figure and a Action Man 40th Anniversary SAS Complete Uniform Set.

Two out of the three were impulse buys. The Sideshow SDCC 2012 Exclusive G.I. Joe Green Beret Lt Falcon sixth scale figure and Action Man 40th Anniversary SAS Complete Uniform Set were unplanned as I did not pre-order them but they just happen to pop up whereas the ThreeA (3A) 1/6 scale Adventure Kartel Dead Cosmonaut Golovorez 12.5-inch figure has been on the waiting list since I pre-ordered it some time ago.

continued from previous post...
SAS: Who Dares Wins!
Here are some of the 1/6 scale SAS CRW (Special Air Service Counter Revolutionary Warfare) 12-inch figures that have ever been released, with the Action Man SAS figures going all the way back to the 1980s. Up front and center is the latest released MC Toys M-035 1/6 scale SAS CRW (1987-2000) 12-inch action figure. He might be missing some stuff (like the ear defender and helmet but it's still very well produced with excellent parts and accessories, and would make a great addition for anyone who's just started or intend to start collecting 12-inch Special Forces action figures. DAM Toys will be releasing a 1/6 scale Spetsnaz FSB Alpha Group 12-inch Special Operations figure soon (pictures HERE) and there's the awesome incoming DID 1/6 scale LAPD SWAT 12-inch figure with Ryan Gosling head sculpt (preview pictures HERE). My interest and obsession with 1/6 scale figures actually started with the Action Man SAS 12-inch figures. I saw them on display at a friend's house and was instantly hooked. They looked so intimidating and awesome in their all black attire and gear, peeking out through the gas mask and hood. That was around 1994 and soon after, I began collecting my own 12-inch Action Man figures. That was 20 years ago. Time certainly flies when you are having FUN :)

MC Toys M-035 1/6 scale SAS CRW (1987-2000) 12-inch action figure full kit Review II
continued from earlier post...
Britain's SAS are one of the world's premier Special Forces and have provided many countries with specialist training in both standard soldiering techniques and those of Counter Revolutionary Warfare or CRW. Even the Royal Hong Kong Police SDU (Special Duties Unit) were trained by the SAS, before the handover back to China in 1997. Check out the previously posted toy blog posts of the SDU here.

This was the standard Counter Revolutionary Warfare outfit developed by the Special Air Service (SAS) as part of the uniform for the special projects team. The special projects team is the official name for the Special Air Service anti–hijacking counter–terrorism team. It is trained in Close Quarter Battle (CQB) and sniper techniques and specializes in hostage rescue in buildings or on public transport. The team was formed in 1975 after Prime Minister Edward Heath asked the Ministry of Defence to prepare for any possible terrorist attack similar to the massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics and ordered that the SAS Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) wing be raised.
MC Toys has quite faithfully produced (replicated) the SAS CRW trooper of 1987-2000 in 1/6 scale and I must say, looking at this figure in pictures, you can be forgiven for mistaking this figure as a 1:1 scale SAS CRW trooper.

Review 1: MC Toys M-035 1/6 scale SAS CRW (1987-2000) 12-inch action figure (Luke Evans)
The SAS CRW (Special Air Service Counter Revolutionary Warfare) was formed in 1975 after Prime Minister Edward Heath asked the Ministry of Defence to prepare for any possible terrorist attack similar to the massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics. SAS CRW is trained in Close Quarter Battle (CQB) and sniper techniques and specialises in hostage rescue in buildings or on public transport.
In 1980 the SAS were involved in a hostage rescue during the Iranian Embassy Siege in London. The two SAS teams on-scene — Red Team and Blue Team — were ordered to begin their simultaneous assaults, under the codename Operation Nimrod, at 19:23 on May 5 after negotiations failed. The raid lasted 17 minutes and involved 30 to 35 soldiers. The terrorists killed one hostage and seriously wounded two others during the raid while the SAS killed all but one of the terrorists. The SAS raid, codenamed "Operation Nimrod", was broadcast live at peak time on a bank holiday Monday evening and was viewed by millions of people, mostly in the UK, making it a defining moment in British history. I remembered watching the footage on the news and from then on, the SAS, a regiment that was largely unknown at the time owing to the covert nature of its operations, was thrust into the public eye.

Dragon WWII SAS Officer "Eddie Mac" Review
The Special Air Service was a unit of the British Army during the Second World War, formed in July 1941 by David Stirling and originally called "L" Detachment, Special Air Service Brigade. It was conceived as a commando force to operate behind enemy lines in the North African Campaign and initially consisted of five officers and 60 other ranks. [source: wiki]
This is the recently released DML Dragon Models Ltd 1:6 scale 12-inch SAS Officer Lieutenant "Eddie Mac", operating in the North African Campaign of the Second World War, around 1942-43. This is probably one of the most distinct image of the British SAS operating behind enemy lines during WWII.

Medicom Cro-Magnon MSFS 1 - SAS
Now here's a pattern that never goes out of style - BLACK! (In reference to my previous post about the Woodlands camouflage pattern)
This was the first 1/6 scale military figure in the Medicom Cro-Magnon MSFS (Medicom Special Forces Series): the SAS (Special Air Service), released in 2000. The SAS gained fame and recognition worldwide after the Iranian Embassy Storming (or Operation Nimrod) in May 1980 was played out in front of the media and broadcast to the world.
Iranian Arab separatists had taken over the Iranian embassy in London. The siege was ended when the Special Air Service (SAS) stormed the building and rescued 19 of 26 hostages (5 hostages had been released prior to the raid, 1 hostage was killed during the assault and 1 hostage had been executed prior to the assault). 5 separatists were killed and 1 was captured. The last surviving gunman had posed as a hostage and was escorted outside the embassy. There, a real hostage quickly identified him as one of the attackers. One SAS soldier was allegedly about to take him back into the building to be shot. The soldier was prevented from doing so when it was pointed out that the world's media were watching.
This 1/6 Medicom Cro-Magnon SAS operator from the Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) wing of the SAS came dressed in Assault Suit (with trunks), balaclava, SF10 Respirator with removable flash-resistant protective lens (Dark Lenses), CT100E electronic ear defender headset with earphone (Audio Harness), AC100/1 composite helmet, Level-2 flak vest (body armor), black suede Quick Reaction Vest (assault vest), SAS dagger in sheath, Flashbang grenades, Rappelling Gloves, Diver's Watch, Browning HP Mk III semi-automatic handgun with drop-down holster, two extra pistol magazines in double magazine pouch, MP5 Triple Magazine Pouch with extra magazines, H&K MP5K SMG with double-clip magazine, Suppressor and Telescopic Stock, and Assault Boots (with socks).

SF10 Respirator (with removable flash-resistant protective lens) connected to PTT (Push To Talk) switch for radio communication (audio harness)
MP5 triple magazine pouch with extra MP5 magazines and nicely detailed assault boots
The well produced H&K (Heckler & Koch) MP5K SMG with double-clip magazine and Telescopic Stock
This was a more modern SAS Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) operator. Action Man had released 1/6 scale 12-inch SAS operators from the May 1980 seige back in the 1980s after the successful assault. I'd posted about them HERE.
And Kubrick had issued the 1980s SAS counter-terrorist team with their modified SAS assault Landrover (pictures HERE)

33,000 NATO troops in Afghanistan
Besides the 17,000 US troops who are headed for Afghanistan to join the 20,000 American soldiers already there, Afghanistan also has 33,000 troops from other NATO nations attempting to stabilise the country. Among the NATO nations, there are the Australians, British and Germans.

Australian 1st SQN SASR Desert Ops
BBI released this Australian 1st SQN SASR Desert Ops "SGT Barney" in 2006 and we finally get the aussie desert camouflage uniform or desert auscam.
Headsculpt resembles actor Richard Chamberlain of Shogun and King Solomon's Mines where he played Allan Quatermain, big game hunter and occasional trader in southern Africa. Another famous actor who played Allan Quatermain was none other than Sir Sean Connery in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), he of the famous 007 fame as well as being the father of one Indiana Jones.
Tactical headset connected to PTT PRC 148 radio and Afghan style scarf (guess he's doing his part in the war on terror in Afghanistan)
Lock and load, and ready to rock and roll in his Desert Auscam BDU and Merrell Chameleon Vintilators.

M4 carbine with PEQ2 laser pointer, Surefire tactical light, ELCAN tactical scope and M203 grenade launcher. Although the F88 AuSteyr - a derivative of the Austrian Steyr AUG STG-77 assault rifle - is the ADF's standard individual weapon, special forces prefer the M4 for its battle-tested reliability and handling.

Australian SAS Regiment Trooper
I also got this figure, the Royal Australian SAS Regiment Trooper "SGT Sean Bannon" at the same time as the SASR HALO. My intention was to combine the two sets into one for a more complete SASR HALO trooper coz if you remove the HALO parachute rig from "CPL Chris Naylor", he'll be just in his AusCam BDU and weapon, not exactly decked out to take out "tangos". However, after kitting out the two, I liked them both individually and that's how they stayed. "SGT Sean Bannon" is more complete as a trooper than "CPL Chris Naylor" is as a HALO jumper.
Face resembles that of Telly Savalas, who played a religious fanatic named Archer J Maggott in the movie "The Dirty Dozen".
