SAF snipers in the advanced course take their game of stealth to the concrete jungle by Alphonsus Chern, Executive Photojournalist, The Straits Times.

Participants in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) first two-week Advanced Sniper Course delve into the science of long-range ballistics, in-depth weapon handling, engagement of multiple targets and urban sniping. All are qualified snipers, having previously graduated from the Basic Sniper Course, a nine-week programme that teaches navigation, field craft, long-range shooting and the art of stalking - moving stealthily through natural terrain without being spotted. The advance course aims to equip snipers with the skills to operate in an urban environment and to enhance their proficiency in using their weapons.

(Above) In order to approach and occupy a building, a team of snipers mask their presence by stalking through the jungle for most of the journey, pausing with pistols at the ready only to watch and listen for any sign of nearby enemies. Dam Toys 1/6th scale 75th Ranger Regiment Chalk Leader of Task Force Ranger from Operation Gothic Serpent circa Somalia 1993 - preview pics with more details posted on the blog HERE. Operation Gothic Serpent was a military operation conducted by special operations forces of the United States with the primary mission of capturing warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. One of the key events is the downing of a UH-60 Black Hawk and the subsequent attempt to rescue its crew. As a result of the Black Hawk Down, the raid quickly became the most intensive close combat in the military history of the United States since the Vietnam War. The events of the raid were later renamed the Battle of Mogadishu by international media.

Mark Bowden wrote a book about it and it was then adapted into a film directed by Ridley Scott and released in 2001, aptly named BLACK HAWK DOWN.

3 shots, 3 kills – A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, & Dangerous Days at Sea

I had posted this on my toy blog on August 4, 2009 (and it has already garnered 19,700 page views) but with the release and screening of the recent film "Captain Phillips", I think it's worth to bring it up again :) "Captain Phillips" is a 2013 American action thriller film directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi. The film tells how merchant mariner Captain Richard Phillips was taken hostage by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean during the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009 led by Abduwali Muse. The screenplay by Billy Ray is based upon the book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea (2010), by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

The film covers more on the events that occur before the SEAL Team's arrival while my toy blog post was more centered on the men who had only one chance to get everything right the first time.

As published on August 4, 2009:
Reported in The Straits Times today: A five-day hostage drama involving US ship captain Richard Phillips ended on Sunday when US Navy SEALs shot dead three of the four Somali pirates. In a surprise night-time assault on Easter Sunday, US Navy SEAL snipers shot and killed the three pirates holding US cargo ship Captain Richard Phillips (the fourth pirate only survived because he wasn't on the boat), effectively ending a five-day hostage drama.

The US operation, personally approved by US President Barack Obama, had been carried out after negotiations with the three gunmen became heated. On Sunday evening, a split-second decision was taken for the snipers to shoot down the pirates. Vice-Adm Gortney said one of the pirates had pointed an AK-47 at the back of Capt Phillips, who was tied up and in imminent danger of being killed.

According to CNN, the navy SEAL snipers were brought in earlier by chopper and dropped into the ocean behind the USS Bainbridge warship, which had rushed to the hostages' rescue. Capt Phillips had surrendered himself to the pirates to safeguard his 19 crew members when the pirates hijacked his ship, the Maersk Alabama, last Wednesday.

Review III: 3A BBICN Exclusive World War Robot WWR 1/6 scale Bot Sniper Punter 12-inch Figure

continued from part 2...

In my first part review of this 3A Punter Bot Sniper figure HERE, I covered the box packaging and a undressed i.e. basic grunt looking figure without the full gear. This was then followed up with a review of Punter wearing the assault and load bearing vests as well as the boonie hat but without the camouflage ghillie suit (pictures HERE). So finally we get to see how threeA (3A) BBICN Exclusive World War Robot (WWR) 1/6 scale Bot Sniper Punter 12-inch Figure really looks like fully suited up.

The 3A Bot Sniper camouflage ghillie suit is not so much worn but more tied together. There are strings located in the reverse side for you to tie the camouflage "netting" to the figure's arms and neck so that the ghillie suit stays in place and does not slip off. Unlike BBI Elite Force 1/6 scale USMC Sniper "Snake" 12-inch figure which came with a full ghillie suit with "strips" which you had to manually tie to complete the look (you can view the pictures HERE), 3A WWR Punter Bot Sniper ghillie suit is less of a suit and more of a "cover" - you just lay it on top of the figure's existing outfit and tie it down in place with strings at strategic locations, two for each arm and one for the neck. 3A BBICN Exclusive World War Robot WWR 1/6 scale Bot Sniper Punter 12-inch Figure Review II

I like military figures. The properly trained and honed military guys always strike me as well-disciplined soldiers transformed into lean mean fighting machines with a heart. A strong military gives the people of the country confidence and acts as a deterrence to opposing / invading forces which in turn helps to ensure a good government. A military that is too strong makes it dangerous as martial law can take over at anytime. A weak military puts the country at risk of invasion and civil unrest / war.

That said, military figures in a future sci-fi world like the colonial marines seen in "Aliens" or "Starship Troopers" as well as soldiers of a post-apocalyptic world intrigues me even more because in these instances, the artist is imagining how the future is seen through the eyes of these soldiers. So the grunts of World War Robot Universe designed by Ashley Wood interests me much because besides humans, they also fight robots or warbots.

This is the 3A World War Robot WWR 1/6 scale Bot Sniper Punter 12-inch figure which was released as a BBICN Retail Exclusive. I've pretty much covered the box packaging and its contents in the earlier post, including detailing the parts and accessories, and what Punter wears under the assault and load bearing vests. This is the second post and part 2 review of threeA's Punter Bot Sniper 1/6 scale figure.

Review 1: 3A BBICN Exclusive World War Robot WWR 1/6 scale Punter Bot Sniper 12-inch Figure

The term World War Robot Universe refers to the complete fictional story and world of the World War Robot intellectual property of Ashley Wood and T.P. Louise. WWR format figures are 1/6th scale toys of the various bots and humans of the WWR Universe, while their smaller WWRp counterparts are half that size at 1/12th scale.

The Great War takes place between multiple different factions; the most obvious are the Martians, humans who have left Earth and settled on Mars seeking refuge, and the Terrans those who remain on Earth and seek to subdue the Martians to their fanatic religious ideals with violent means. Both sides utilize warbots in their ongoing conflict.

Grunts are the lowest ranking Terran soldier in the World War Robot Universe. They are described as having very little training for the battlefield and being the "pawns" in the Terran's war. The Grunts are young soldiers who are enlisted as servants for the religious purpose and are given very little investment in training.

Bot Sniper Punter is a Grunt-based character that uses a rather LARGE sniper rifle. His attire includes a boonie hat and camouflage ghillie suit. He snipes warbots!

The keffiyeh / kufiya (Arabic: كوفية‎, kūfiyyah, plural كوفيات, kūfiyyāt), also better known as a ghutrah (غُترَة) or shemagh (شماغ), and also known by some as ḥaṭṭah (حَطّة), mashadah (مَشَدة), or in Persian chafiye (چَفیِه), and in Kurdish cemedanî ( جه مه داني), is a traditional Arab headdress fashioned from a square, usually cotton, scarf. It is typically worn by Arab men, as well as some Kurds.

It is commonly found in arid regions to provide protection from direct sun exposure, as well to protect the mouth and eyes from blown dust and sand. Its distinctive woven check pattern may have originated in an ancient Mesopotamian representation of either fishing nets or ears of grain, but the true origin of the pattern remains unknown. For decades, keffiyeh have been issued to British soldiers who now, almost exclusively, refer to them as shemaghs. Their use by some units and formations of the military and police forces of the former British Empire and subsequent Commonwealth dates back to before the Second World War. Since the beginning of the War on Terror (used to specifically refer to the ongoing military campaign led by the US, UK and their allies against organizations and regimes identified by them as terrorist), these keffiyeh / shemagh, usually cotton and in military olive drab or khaki with black stitching, have been adopted by US troops as well, a reversal of previous policy which saw them strictly forbidden during the Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991).

Even mercenaries have sniper teams and two mercs are definitely better off than one ;p

A marksman, markswoman, or marksperson is a person who is skilled in precision, or a sharpshooter shooting, using projectile weapons, such as with a rifle but most commonly with a designated marksman rifle and / or a sniper rifle, to shoot at long range targets. The main difference between a marksman and a normal sniper is that a marksman is usually considered an organic part of a team of soldiers, whereas regular snipers tend to work alone or with other snipers.

A sniper is a highly trained marksman who operates alone or in pair who maintain close visual contact with the enemy and engages targets from concealed positions or physical distances exceeding the detection capabilities of the enemy personnel, without being detected. These sniper teams operate independently, with little combat asset support from their parent units. Snipers typically have highly selective and specialized training and use high-precision rifles and optics, and often have sophisticated communication assets to feed valuable combat information back to their units.

Review Very Hot 1/6 scale Mercenary uniform set (sand version) for 12-inch military figure

Another 1/6 scale Bruce Willis 12-inch figure? Why not since Bruce Willis has been keeping himself pretty busy with "The Expendables 2", "Looper", "Fire with Fire", "G.I. Joe: Retaliation", "A Good Day to Die Hard" and "RED 2". Because of Bruce Willis persona and his roles as an action hero who never seems to quit and cannot die, he has been the subject of quite a few 1/6 scale manufacturers and target of toy companies when making and releasing 12-inch figures.

This is just 1/6 scale Bruce Willis modeling the recently released Very Hot 1/6 scale Mercenary uniform set (sand version) for 12-inch military figure. Since the set doesn't come with a figure, I thought I'll just use this Bruce Willis 12-inch figure for the kitting up and display. The latest Bruce Willis figure released was the Art Figures 1/6 scale City Police 12-inch Figure reviewed earlier HERE and HERE. This particular 1/6 scale Bruce Willis head sculpt was a custom head I bought and used to kitbash a 1/6 scale Bruce Willis as John McClane 12-inch figure from Die-Hard 3 (You can view the pictures HERE).

But enough about Bruce. Let's see what Very Hot 1/6 scale Mercenary uniform set (sand version) for 12-inch military figure has to offer. By calling this a mercenary set, Very Hot doesn't have to be accurate in terms of the gear and equipment since mercenaries don't belong to any army and buy their stuff from all over. Hint: I bought this particular set mainly for the M40A1 sniper rifle. A mercenary is a person who takes part in an armed conflict, who is not a national or a party to the conflict, and is "motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party".

As a result of the assumption that a mercenary is essentially motivated by money, the term mercenary usually carries negative connotations. There is a blur in the distinction between a mercenary and a foreign volunteer, when the primary motive of a soldier in a foreign army is uncertain.

This will be an upcoming release by Very Hot - two 1/6th scale Mercenary Suits (Green version & Sand version) for 12-inch figures. As with all of Very Hot's offerings, the 1/6th scale Head and 12-inch figure Body are not included with the set. Very Hot only offers uniform / outfit sets with accessories, gear and weapons - all the stuff a 12-inch guy needs to be equipped for battle.

Incoming: DAM 1/6 Delta Force Marksman, Task Force Ranger, Op Gothic Serpent, 1993 Somalia

Already this figure is winning praises from many quarters, not just for the variety and quality of parts but most importantly because DAM Toys has managed to do what some big companies cannot and that is, COMPLETE the series. DAM has been able to finish what they started, which is more than can be said for some companies that turn tail and run the moment they hit a small bump.

Continuing from the previous post, DAM has revealed their last figure in the six-figure set of Task Force Ranger, Op Gothic Serpent, 1993 Somalia. The final 12-inch figure is a 1/6th scale Delta Force Marksman and he is meant to be Johnny Strong as SFC Randy Shughart, a Delta Force Marksman flying on Black Hawk Super Six-Two in the film "Black Hawk Down (2001)", an American drama war film depicting the Battle of Mogadishu, a raid integral to the United States' effort to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

Sergeant First Class Randall David Shughart (August 13, 1958–October 3, 1993) was a soldier in the United States Army special operations unit, the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1SFOD-D), or "Delta Force." 21st Century Villains: Auz and Tazz Mantrackers All for just five dollars - cheap cheap :)

21st Century Toys first released 1/6 scale "The Ultimate Soldier" 12-inch figures way back in the late 1990s, starting with Vietnam and Modern Era gear. World War II figures soon followed and to make things interesting, they also released a line of 21st Century "Villains". Prices for these figures then were much lower than what we are paying today i.e. the cost of a Hot Toys TrueType 12-inch body (nude) could pay for a complete boxed 21st Century figure with outfit / uniform, gear and accessories plus weapons. You could still have some change back. Those were the days.

This was the 2001 / 2002 released 21st Century "Villains" Auz and Tazz Mantrackers which I got recently for SGD5 (5 Singapore dollars = 3.98724 U.S. dollars). To me, that's a pretty good deal and although the quality may not be the same as Hot Toys or Soldier Story, I really like the variety this set offers in terms of 1/6 gear, equipment and weapon :) And for 5 bucks, I think this is alright.

21st Century "Villains" Auz and Tazz Mantrackers comes in the pretty standard 21st Century window box packaging with velcro secured book-style flap. Nothing fancy with the cardboard boxes containing these 12-inch figures. You just throw them away after taking everything out. No worries about keeping the box unlike Hot Toys packaging which are all very fancy and nice but after taking the figure out, you find it a pain to throw the box away (because obviously we all paid good money for the box design and packaging since the price we pay for the product includes the box as well - Hot Toys won't make it for free!). If you decide to keep the box, it takes up storage space or even shelf space which is prime space in land scarce countries like Singapore. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Pre-order BBICN and ThreeA Exclusive: World War Robot (WWR) Bot Sniper Punter

You can now pre-order the ThreeA and BBICN Exclusive World War Robot (WWR) Bot Sniper Punter figure at TFH (link HERE) The figure does look interesting especially with the bigA$$ sniper rifle he is carrying.How does one even walk around with that? I don't think he could even get out of his bunk with the weapon strapped across his back like that (scroll down to see the next picture). Imagine if he is trying to find a place in the jungle to snipe from; he's going to be banging into a lot of trees XD so much for stealth.

Me thinks this is a case where design did not meet functionality. How does one even move around with that HUGE "martha fighting" gun? So anyway, you can pre-order if you dig this :) Just thought I'll share.
