Captain Action costume sets of Spider-Man and Captain America will debut in the fall of 2011 at Toys ’R’ Us and other specialty retailers (in the US) for the first time in over 40 years since the original Captain Action line was launched.
The original 1/6 scale Captain Action Figure, created by G.I. Joe designer Stan Weston, was released in 1966 and had uniforms for a variety of licensed characters that allowed Captain Action to become Batman, Captain America, Spider-Man, the Lone Ranger and a host of other characters.
The pictures released are actually computer generated mock-ups to give us an idea of how the final product will look like. I guess they don't have the final prototype pictures yet.
Although it has taken a while, getting the Marvel character costume versions of the character really does restore the property to its Silver Age glory, a fact that is underlined by the Silver Age art and costume details. They seem to be creating each character based on an identifiable artist's work - John Romita Spidey and Jack Kirby Cap for starters.
These costume sets will be followed by the release of additional Marvel character costume sets for Iron Man and Thor in 2012.
Interesting that they're going with the build-a-figure concept. Six Deluxe Outfit Sets total will need to be purchased to complete the Hawkeye Outfit - Captain America, Spider Man, Iron Man, Thor, Red Skull, and Dr Doom.
These are for comic book fans who can identify with these Marvel super heroes, not the movie versions which Hot Toys are putting out. It's a nice change and it's always good to have two versions of the same hero rendered differently - a comic book version vs the movie version. I'm liking it :)
