"Cowboys & Aliens" is a 2011 American science fiction Western film directed by Jon Favreau and starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde. The main plot revolves around an amnesiac outlaw (Craig), a wealthy cattleman (Ford), and a mysterious traveler (Wilde) who must ally to save a group of townspeople abducted by aliens.
I had actually talked about 12-inch "Cowboys & Aliens" figures in an earlier post HERE, putting together 1/6 scale figures that had the actors' likenesses i.e. Daniel Craig as Jake Lonergan, Harrison Ford as Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde, and Adam Beach as Nat Colorado, Colonel Dolarhyde's right-hand man. Well, it looks like Medicom has secured the license to produce Jake Lonergan and Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde figures, and has released these prototype / preview pictures.
Here's the Medicom 1/6 scale Daniel Craig as Jake Lonergan, a wanted outlaw with amnesia and a strange metal band shackled to his wrist. Given Medicom's notorious reputation as an under-scaled manufacturer, this 1/6 Jake Lonergan figure won't be able to stand very tall at all which is a shame as the prototype head sculpt really shows a lot of promise.
Medicom 1/6 scale Harrison Ford as Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde, a powerful and rich cattleman who controls the town of Absolution.
Director Jon Favreau had cast Craig and Ford in the film because they were actors who suited the action-adventure roles so the characters would be less seen as comedic.
While Ford is well-known for playing Indiana Jones, the filmmakers wanted to avoid giving him a cowboy hat that would remind audiences too much of Jones. Writer Alex Kurtzman said, "We needed to make sure that — no pun intended — we tipped a hat to iconography of Harrison Ford and also presented the audience with a very different version."
A scene in which Craig's character Jake Lonergan rides a horse alongside a ravine and jumps down it onto a spacecraft emulated many scenes in American Western films where cowboys rode along a moving train and jumped on it. Favreau said the scene referenced the one in the 1981 film "Raiders of the Lost Ark" where Indiana Jones chases a truck while riding a horse and noted that a similar scene existed in the 1939 film Stagecoach, saying "We're constantly referencing back to our roots."
I believe they are making these in conjunction with Enterbay which could mean true 1/6 scale, though from what I've heard they will be a bit on the pricey side.
ReplyDeletePRICEY – why does that not surprise me? Coming from Medicom and Enterbay can't be a good combination either. I've been reading about the quality issues (lack thereof) regarding Enterbay's releases. And Medicom is still making and molding belts out of plastic when everyone else is giving us leather belts with working buckles. An easy pass then :)
ReplyDeleteWith the very talented amount of customizers in the Western arena, you could re-invent these figures on your own (complete with horses)with a few good head sculpts. :) But it would still be pricey...lol
ReplyDeleteI'd probably get this guy and kitbash it with a 1/6 suit and tie and voila, I would have myself a James Bond figure with Daniel Craig's official head sculpt!
ReplyDeletehey imranbecks, just a little note: you need to find equally small sized suits for Medicom figures because they are puny. otherwise, i think that's a GREAT idea :)
