Review II: BBK 003 - 1/6 scale Cowboy 12-inch Collectible Figure OR Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex

continued from previous post... Part 2 of my 2-part review of BBK 003 - 1/6 scale Cowboy 12-inch Collectible Figure OR Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex. And as I mentioned in the previous post, BBK got it all wrong when they called this figure a COWBOY (an animal herder who tends cattle on ranches in North America, traditionally on horseback, and often performs a multitude of other ranch-related tasks). This 12-inch figure is more of a post-American Civil War Confederate cavalryman and perhaps movie-accurate as Jonah Hex from the 2010 movie of the same name.

In most of his stories in DC comics, Jonah Hex displays no supernatural or superhuman powers. However, he does possess some exceptional abilities, acquired through a combination of talent and training.

Despite being blind in his right eye, Hex is an outstanding marksman who rarely misses his target. He is extremely fast on the draw and can be seen in many stories gunning down multiple foes before any of them can get off a shot. He can wield two guns, one in each hand, with equal efficiency. He is also a resourceful combatant, often relying on stealth, tricks, and improvised weapons and traps to defeat enemies.

This is the BBK 003 1/6 scale Cowboy (NOT) 12-inch collectible figure which comes with 1/6 scale Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex head sculpt, 12-inch figure body, cavalry hat, shirt, vest, pants, leather gun belt with double holsters and 50 individual metal bullets, two revolvers with removable cylinders (where the individual metal bullets may be loaded) and working hammers and leather boots with spurs. Close-up pictures of the BBK 003 Cowboy 1/6 scale head sculpt i.e. Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex head sculpt - after having his face branded by the evil Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich), the man who killed Jonah Hex's family and disfigured Jonah. He's wearing the Confederate States of America (1861 - 1865) cavalry hat / stetson. Stetsons are the brand of hat manufactured by the John B. Stetson Company. Founded in 1865, John B Stetson Company began when the founder headed west and created the original hat of the West, the “Boss of the Plains”; This Western hat that would become the cornerstone of Stetson’s hat business and is still in production today.

The head sculpt is pretty well produced with all the rich details and painted with the right skin tone to make this figure look very real and very close to the actor Josh Brolin who plays Jonah Hex in the film.

Check out the detailed reproduction of the scarred face with the burnt skin as well as the teeth details - you can make out each individual tooth exposed by the arched lips. The cavalry hat too is a good fit and doesn't appear oversized which is always the problem with 1/6 scale head gear, to the extent that some 1/6 scale companies produce the head sculpts with hat sculpted on, like Sideshow Collectibles Indiana Jones 12-inch figure (reviewed HERE)

In the DC comics, Jonah Hex is an exceptional tracker, able to follow trails several days old through rain and mud in spite of his quarry's best efforts to cover their tracks. Hex often displays a keen danger sense which warns him of ambushes and traps.This is not a supernatural ability: it is simply an instinct honed through years of experience in battle and hunting dangerous foes. Hex is also extremely tough and has been known to continue fighting even after suffering torture or severe injury.

Jonah Hex has a reputation throughout the West as a ruthless and prolific killer, but like Batman, Hex is bound by a personal code of honor to protect and avenge the innocent.

On many occasions, this by itself has proven enough to deter potential foes. Knowing that the infamous Jonah Hex is pursuing them often unnerves Hex's targets so badly that they make fatal mistakes, such as wasting ammunition, falling into traps, or turning and engaging Hex in a desperate stand-off.

While growing up, I was exposed to a lot of American Wild West TV shows such as The adventures of Rin Tin Tin, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, The Lone Ranger, and of course Wild Wild West with James T. West, the charming gunslinger (played by Robert Conrad), and Artemus Gordon (played by Ross Martin), the brilliant gadgeteer and master of disguise - just to name a few. Then there's John Wayne who epitomized rugged masculinity and is famous for his demeanor, including his distinctive calm voice, walk, and height. Let's not forget Clint Eastwood, whose name is an anagram for "Old West Action!" Doesn't that say it all ;p

At the same time, there were also a lot of comics on American Wild West characters - Rawhide Kid, The Lone Ranger, Two-Gun Kid, and of course Jonah Hex. There were more but I can't remember all the titles :( And last but not least, there are the Space Westerns - a subgenre of science fiction, primarily grounded in film and television programming, that transposes themes of American Western books and film to a backdrop of futuristic space frontiers; it is the complement of the science fiction Western, which transposes science fiction themes onto an American Western setting.

Examples of Space Westerns: Films like Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (the scenes on Nimbus III are heavily influenced by Westerns), Star Wars, Serenity, Outland and animated TV series like The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, BraveStarr, Silverhawks and animes such as Captain Harlock, Cowboy Bebop, Galaxy Express 999, Trigun.

Growing up with all these Westerns had an impact on me and that is why I have an affinity for American Wild West action figures, which was one of the reasons that attracted me to this BBK 003 1/6 scale Cowboy 12-inch figure which we all know is NOT a cowboy but still a Wild West gunslinger, nonetheless, and a bounty hunter at that. And I might add, a fine figure too :)
