Review of Kaustic Plastik 1/6 scale XXL Project Set 1 - The Fantasy Warrior head and outfit set

I've known Ted Menten for many years now and he has become a great friend from afar all thanks to the internet - it certainly has made the world a much smaller place. We exchange banter regularly, almost on a daily basis. Ted has lots of interesting stories to share and I just enjoy reading about his early days experience with toys and such. He's such a humble guy you wouldn't believe that he worked with Don Levine (father of G.I. Joe) back in the day and he helped develop the 12-inch action figure for boys (you can't sell dolls to boys because only girls play with dolls). Without G.I Joe, there wouldn't be a market for 12-inch figures today, let alone all the collectibles related to 1/6 scale figures.

Ted wrote me to wish me a Happy Belated Birthday (see text below) which is the reason for this post:
Alex,
What do you get for the guy who seems to have it all? LOL
Well, I thought about it and decided to give you a gift of free time -- a few extra moments with your family. Here is my take on the just released Kaustik Plastik Fantasy Warrior set that I got from BBTS (Big Bad Toy Store). So, if you want to take off some time here is your chance.
Happy Birthday
Ted

So this review of the Kaustic Plastik KP01 1/6 scale XXL Project Set 1 - The Fantasy Warrior set is possible all thanks to Ted Menten, a guest reviewer in this instance :)

According to TFH, this Kaustic Plastik 1/6 scale XXL Project Set 1 - The Fantasy Warrior head and outfit set is a limited worldwide release of 500 sets only. The contents are as follows: New 1/6 scale Long hair Head sculpt, Die-Cast Sword (Long 16.5 cm), Leather Shirt, Leather Armour, Fur Skirt, Fur Scabbard, Pants, Boots (Leather and fur), Two Leather wristbands, Small Leather Bag. Note: 12-inch figure Body not included.

This outfit and accessory set with a head is a good value. The head sculpt is strong and has a lot of character in its determined expression.

The leather shirt and leather armor are well made and fairly easy to put together on the body. I used the Hot Toys advanced muscular body. The pants are a good fit and the fur hip wrap (skirt) has an elastic waist band and goes on easily. The boots are soft leather with a hard plastic sole. They are not easy to get on to the feet because this body has multiple ankle and toe joints that complicate pulling on the boots.

The arm wrist bands are fine but are hard to lace up. The thread laces on the shirt and wrist bands is hard to work with and more than a little frustrating to tie off. The hip leather pouch is tricky to attach because the fastenings are so tiny.

Perhaps the best thing about this set is the beautiful detailed die cast metal sword. The fur scabbard is sufficient for the job. All-in-all this is a good value for about $85.00 US. Just be prepared to spend some time putting it all together.

THANKS again Ted for the great review and pictures. As for all you other guys, I'm off for the day all thanks to Ted's birthday gift LOL

In case you are all wondering, this figure is inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan in "Conan the Destroyer", a 1984 American sword and sorcery / adventure film directed by Richard Fleischer, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mako Iwamatsu reprising their roles as Conan and Akiro the wizard, respectively.

By the way, this isn't the first review contributed by Ted. Ted also did a guest review of the CmToys 1/6 scale 12-inch figure body back in 2012 (check out the post on my toy blog HERE)

  1. From Ted Menten:
    Alex,

I hope you took some time off today.

Many of the action figure companies use a thin cording like the one used for the Warrior set. It has a nice look BUT it is so slippery that it is almost impossible to tie off.

I use "carpet thread" which is heavier and stronger than regular thread. Best brand is MASTEX nylon bonded finish. It comes in many colors. If the "look" needs to be heavier it can easily be braided to look more like rope.

The advantage to using it is that you can easily tie off the ends in a surgeon's knot. Parents often teach their kids to use a version of this to keep their shoe laces tight. Basically, you loop one lace over the other three times and pull tight before making a bow. The cord that toy companies use won't "lock" the way this does.

    Happy kit bashing.

    Ted
