Preview: Soldier Story 1/6 scale Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK) 12" figure - Miroslav Klose?

Hot Toys used to produce military figures back when they just started out, before they ever ventured into the movie merchandising business which has sealed their success and brought the art of collecting 12-inch figures up many notches to a position and place where people all over the world sit up and take notice. The fact that a news company like CNN even conducted an interview with Hot Toys founder and CEO HOward Chan says a lot about what the company is doing right and where it stands today in the world. Hot Toys has certainly brought a great many people on board to buy their products.

With Hot Toys absent from the 1/6 scale military figure market, at least two other companies have come out and taken over the mantle Hot Toys left behind. These two companies have been faithfully producing some very fine 1/6 scale modern military figures and they seem to be in keen competition with each other which is good for we collectors because we get to choose which ones to buy since more options are made available to us. The two companies are Dam Toys and Soldier Story.

2014 has been declared the year for Russian 12-inch figures although who declared it and why nobody can fathom. There were many years it was the United States Navy SEAL figure when almost every 1/6 scale figure being released was a USN SEAL 12-inch figure. There was even a year for PMCs (Private Military Contractor, a nicer moniker for Mercenary) and this year, it's been Russian after Russian being previewed and released.

This latest offering by Soldier Story is the 1/6 scale Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK) 12-inch military figure. KSK Kommando Spezialkräfte (Special Forces Command, KSK) is an elite special forces military unit composed of special operations soldiers handpicked from the ranks of Germany's Bundeswehr and organized under the Division Spezielle Operationen (Special Operations Division, DSO). KSK has received many decorations and awards from NATO, the USA and its affiliates and KSK operatives are frequently requested for joint anti-terror operations, notably in the Balkans and Middle East.

From 1973, until the KSK’s formation in 1996, the West German (and later German) government assigned all counter-terrorist and special operations activities to the GSG 9, a highly trained police force created shortly after the tragic events that transpired during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Prior to 1973, the army’s Fernspäher (Long-Distance Reconnaissance), the navy’s Kampfschwimmer (Combat Swimmers/"Frogmen"), and (until 1989) the Special Weapons Escort Companies—Sonderwaffenbegleitkompanien[3] were the only military units comparable to anything that other nations may have seen as dedicated special forces units. Following the KSK’s activation on April 1, 1997, all but one of the Fernspähkompanie have been either disbanded or merged into the newly constituted unit.
