Soldier Story U.S. Navy SEAL SDV Team 1 Preview

Hot on the heels of Playhouse's announcement that they will be releasing a 1/6 scale 12-inch US Navy SEAL Team Ten (pictures HERE) operator, Soldier Story has also released pictures of their very own SEAL SDV Team to be added :) Good times for 1:6 collectors, more choices for us when they (1:6 manufacturers) all decide to have a go. We'll just call this the SEAL showdown

Soldier Story has called their figure a Operation Red Wing 5th Anniversary Edition. Operation Red Wing was a counter-insurgent mission in Kunar province, Afghanistan, involving four members of the United States Navy SEALs, which took place on June 28, 2005. Three of the SEALs were killed during the initial operation, as were other American Special Operations soldiers (SEALs and Nightstalker pilots) whose helicopter was shot down while flying to provide support and rescue to the team. The headsculpt for this Soldier Story U.S. Navy SEAL SDV Team 1 military figure is most interesting indeed, certainly one I did not expect but was pleasantly surprised ;)

The head sculpt is meant to resemble the actor who played Col. Miles Quaritch (see the 3 3/4" figure HERE) in "AVATAR", Highest Grossing Film of All Time (posted HERE), Steven Lang.

Steven Lang was also in the 2009 film "Public Enemies" as Charles Winstead (1891-1973), the FBI Agent in the 1930s-40s, famous for being one of the agents (along with Clarence Hurt and Herman Hollis) who shot and killed John Dillinger (check out Heroic's 12-inch Bank Robber HERE) (played by Johnny Depp) on July 22, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois.

Soldier Story has also loaded their SEAL to the hilt in an amazing mind boggling assortment of gear and weapons :) again, good for us 1:6 collectors, especially when it is quality that comes with quantity.

Note the LBT 1961A chest rig which has also just been released with Toys City SBS (previous post)

There are two optics(EO Tech and Acog), two PEQ's and one CVL (Carbine Visible Laser) with the SEAL Mk 18 Mod 0 (the Close Quarters Battle Receiver upgraded M4 carbine by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (often referred to as NSWC-Crane or just "Crane") as the M4 and M16 are not ideally suited for all missions) [source: wiki]

There are comparison pictures that show the gear are all pretty spot on, including the NYFD Engine 53 Ladder 43 patch. Lieutenant Michael "Murph" Patrick Murphy chose to use the patch as a symbol for his teammates as he grew up in the NYC commuter town of Patchogue, NY on Long Island and was commissioned on December 13th, 2000 and graduated with BUD/S class 236. Lt. Murphy checked on board SDV Team ONE in July of 2002. Murph was killed June 28, 2005 while conducting counter-terrorism operations in Kunar province, Afghanistan. [source: El Barrios Bravest]

Certainly looking forward to getting this SEAL figure as well. Looks like my SEAL squad (check out my posts HERE and HERE for group pictures of 1:6 USN SEALs) just keeps growing ;p

  1. The BDU camo pattern look alike use by the modern British Army Desert Rat.

  2. While it may look like the British Desert DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material), this is actually Tigerstripe Desert Camouflage. They are similar but US Special Operations Forces such as the US Navy SEALs and the Green Berets are still using tigerstripe camouflage in operations in Afghanistan, and it has proved itself to be very effective for this type of environment.

  3. I like the head sculpt, would be an easy avatar bash I suppose. Every now and then I'm tempted by these military figures. Soldier Story really do produce some great sets, I always love the mad amount of accessories they come with.

  5. I wish this HS looked more like Col. Miles Quaritch because I loved that character but to me it looks like an angry John Cleese from Monty Python! Ni!

  8. hi Xruger48X WELCOME to the world of 1/6. In this instance (with Soldier Story) you get the whole package i.e. head, body, outfit / uniform, gear, accessories and weapons. You just have to put them together on the figure - part of the fun is kitting out the figure :) some other companies only sell the outfits and some sell the outfit with the head ONLY so it all depends on which company you're buying from CHEERS
