Review 1: Hot Toys MMS289 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Hawkeye Collectible Figure

This was from my September 2015 haul - you can check out the other stuff I got on my toy blog HERE

With the release of Marvel’s "Avengers: Age of Ultron" this year, 12-inch figure collectors like me get another chance to have a shot at Hot Toys 1:6 scale Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye. When the previous Hot Toys MMS172 "The Avengers" 1/6th scale Hawkeye Limited Edition Collectible Figure was previewed for pre-orders, there just wasn't many takers and when the product was finally released, many latecomers missed out on owning Hawkeye and the price for that particular figure skyrocketed, especially for those "completist" collectors who wanted to have all the members from the Avengers in their collection.

We all know that there's going to be more than one Avengers film and that all the members will assemble again for the sequel so I just waited for the release of this Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series MMS289 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Hawkeye Collectible Figure. Hot Toys tend to get better over time and I was willing to wait for this second round of Avengers figures because I believe that they'll look better in terms of sculpting compared to the first round version. And I'm quite glad I waited :)

Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series MMS289 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Hawkeye Collectible Figure specially features: Authentic and detailed likeness of Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" with movie-accurate facial features including detailed wrinkles and skin texture on an approximately 30 cm (12-inch) tall body with over 30 points of articulations. Let's face it: Hot Toys is the industry leader as far as 1:6 scale figures go and their products are all of museum quality i.e. they can easily be featured in a museum and people will go and see the displays without questioning their authenticity. Hot Toys has brought the level of 1:6 to a whole new different level never seen before and because of the company's high standards, other companies are following in their footsteps and they are not too far behind. A fine example would be Art Figures AF-015 1/6th scale Heavy Armoured Special Cop "DREDD" 12-inch figure released late last year (see my action figure review posts HERE and HERE)

Box packaging is the same as the other Avengers: Age of Ultron figures,  a slip case cover which slides off to reveal the figure and its contents in a window display box.

Hot Toys MMS289 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Hawkeye Collectible Figure seems to come with a lot of accessories but they are mainly arrows which all go into the quiver

Even the Instruction Sheet is all about how to put the arrow heads / tips onto the shaft

And how to put the arrows and shafts into the quiver which can be separated.

Here's everything laid out before assembly: the 13 arrows plus shafts (basically just sticks) and arrow tips (large and small), fully-opened purple and black colored bow, folded purple and black colored bow, speed loader with nine arrows, two arrow speed loaders (magnetic) for attaching to his boots, quiver for his arrows

Here's a closer look at the larger arrow tips / heads - no mention of their purpose and how they are meant to be used. The great thing about collecting movie-accurate 1:6 scale high-end figures with their highly detailed accessories is that you get to see things you cannot see on the big screen, such as the detailing on these arrow heads / tips which most of us would have missed out on if not for this incredibly detailed collectible figure.

There are at least three versions of the smaller arrow heads / tips. Talk about attention to detail

And here's how the arrows and shafts go on the quiver as per the instruction sheet. The shafts are meant to add volume to the quiver as they serve no other function. They are placed in between the arrows. Note: arrows with the large arrow tips will not fit into the quiver which is separated and joined via magnets.

There's also the customary action figure stand with Hawkeye nameplate and the movie logo, extra hands (right palm for holding bow, three left palms of different styles for holding arrow) and a pair of sunglasses

Here's how Hot Toys MMS289 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye Collectible Figure looks without his black and dark burgundy long jacket which is removable. He's wearing some kind of padded white long sleeve tee /vest under the dark burgundy long sleeves top with straps and guards on his forearms. He's wearing the same pants and boots as seen in "The Avengers". You can cross reference with the earlier pictures of Hot Toys MMS172 (Movie Masterpiece Series) The Avengers: 1/6th scale Hawkeye Limited Edition Collectible Figurine HERE.

I find it strange that Hot Toys would add a padded belly to the basic figure body. Were they trying to be movie-accurate? Captain America certainly didn't have a padded belly on him.

Here's Hawkeye with just his dark burgundy long sleeves top over navy blue pants with belts on waist and straps on thighs plus boots. The belt is totally covered by the burgundy top.

And this is how Hot Toys MMS289 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye Collectible Figure looks fully suited up. Besides his quiver of arrows on his back, he also has arrow speed loaders attached to his boots, something extra he didn't have in the first Avengers film. The black and dark burgundy long jacket can be worn loose at the front or zipped up. He's holding the folded purple and black colored bow in his right hand. The folded bow is designed to be opened up (scroll down to see the pictures of the "articulated" bow opening in sequence).

Check out the close-up shots / views of Hot Toys MMS289 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye head sculpt. A definite improvement over the earlier released version.

There are six arrows on each side of the quiver (12 in total) plus one short arrow stored in the center. In the films, he seem to have a lot more arrows when shooting at the bad guys. In fact he doesn't seem to run out of them. That's just make believe in movies, folks. Movies are all about make believe even if they seem very real. If we start questioning and reasoning out everything and try to rationalize them, we are simply taking the enjoyment and fun out of movies.
