Happy Birthday Roy!
This toy blog post is a blast from the past. I posted it on June 29, 2010 and almost six years on it has become relevant again :)
Roy Batty (portrayed by Rutger Hauer), model number N6MAA10816, is the leader of the renegade Nexus-6 replicants and the main antagonist of the film "Blade Runner". He was activated on January 8, 2016 (incept date), which makes him 3 years and 10 months old by the time of the events of the film. So I guess we are now in the FUTURE! Sure don't look like it.
"I've... seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die." These were Roy Batty's last words as he reached the end of his four-year lifespan as a replicant (bioengineered or biorobotic being or simply, android - a robot or synthetic organism designed to look and act like a human).
This is the Brother Production 1/6th scale Revenge of the Replicant 12-inch figure. In the movie "Blade Runner (1982)", Roy Batty is the leader of the renegade Nexus-6 replicants. Roy Batty was played by Rutger Hauer, a Dutch film actor. He is most remembered as the eccentric, violent, yet sympathetic renegade replicant.

This 1:6 scale Roy Batty Renegade Replicant came with his Black Leather-like Trench Coat. The coat has wires hidden under the edges so that the collar could stay up or down depending on how you wanted to pose the 12-inch figure
Here's a closer look at the 1:6 scale Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty head sculpt. IMHO I think the headsculpt is pretty good for a non-Hot Toys product.
Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty was regarded by Philip K Dick (the writer of the novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" on which the movie is based) as "the perfect Batty—cold, Aryan, flawless". Me thinks the head sculpt does the character justice, with the cold, steel blue eyes.
Besides the black leather-like trench coat, this Brother Production Roy Batty also wears a gray T-shirt with 3/4 sleeve (which seems to be the rage now), dark gray pants with red stripes running down the sides and shoes (sneakers, to be specific) with white socks (hidden)
Roy Batty is a combat model, used off-world for military service, and is said to have participated in every off-world battle and conflict from the fighting at the Tannhauser Gate to the Massacre on the Venezeualan Moons.
With an "A" Physical Level (superhuman strength & endurance) and an "A" Mental Level (genius level intellect), he is probably the most dangerous of all the fugitive replicants.
Other accessories include: an alternate injured head (sustained towards the end of the film), White Dove or Pigeon (made from resin), and the 2nd set of hands, one with a nail through the palm, the other with flexible or bendable fingers
And here's Roy Batty in the final scene wearing his Gray boxer shorts and holding on to a pigeon.
As the symptoms of Roy's limited lifespan worsen and his right hand begins to cramp, he grabs a nail and jabs it through his hand in order to regain control of it. BIG mistake by Brother Production here as they have jabbed the nail into his left hand instead. In the prototype pictures, the nail was in the RIGHT hand.
Another look at the tattoos on Roy Batty's body. It is never explained how he got them or what they mean and I didn't know the tattoos looked like that until I saw the first prototype pictures. Too bad they did it on this old-type body when new generation bodies have been popping up. Again, this isn't a Hot Toys product nor Hot Toys pricing so let's cut it some slack.
And now a closer look at Roy Batty's boxer shorts which was what he wore in the end. The dove was Rutger Hauer's idea as he felt that letting go of the dove showed us exactly when the spirit goes.
The 1:6 body with tattoo prints on chest and shoulder - some of it look like images from the "Space Invaders" video game
As Roy's life fades away, he calmly sits and delivers a soliloquy about the experiences of his life.
Rutger Hauer had cut 28 lines from the original script to the now famous last words which reflected Roy Batty's "humanity", and the fact that he chose to save Deckard's life, suggested that perhaps he has gained the empathy that is the thin dividing line between human and replicant.
And check out this post of the Brother Production Blade Hunter, essentially a 1:6 scale Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, Blade Runner.

ReplyDeleteThe tattoos are explained in Future Noir, the book about the making of the film. They're meant to be markings like on a machine - unscrew here, that kind of thing
