Review 1: Hot Toys "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th Captain America 12-inch Collectible Figure

Just got this Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series MMS281 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Captain America Collectible Figure recently (see my June haul post on my toy blog HERE). This is my first of the Avengers: Age of Ultron figures as I decided to wait for the Movie Masterpiece Diecast Series MMS300D11 - Avengers: Age of Ultron - Mark XLV Iron Man figure instead of the Mark XLIII which has already been released.

The movie-accurate Captain America Collectible Figure is specially crafted based on the image of Chris Evans as Captain America / Steve Rogers in Avengers: Age of Ultron, featuring a newly painted helmeted head sculpt, a newly painted Steve Rogers head sculpt, finely tailored Captain America suit, magnetic metal Captain America shield with retractable handles, and a specially designed figure stand.

I'm a big fan of Captain America but I didn't get all the 12-inch Captain America figures Hot Toys have released, only just the ones I like and this one is the latest version of Cap as seen in this year's Avengers: Age of Ultron film. The coolness factor about this most recent 1:6 scale Cap is that the shield is magnetic and attaches to Cap's uniform (back and arms) easily without the need for straps or an extra device (hook) to hold the shield in place, as with the previous versions. I didn't think that this could be done in 1:6 scale but Hot Toys has upped the ante once again and given us something that's very close to the movie version and I applaud them for that :) Talk about realising collector's dreams. They actually made it a reality!

Packaging is the slip-case design which reveals the figure in a window box when the slip-case cover is removed. The 12-inch figure sits inside the tray along with all the 1:6 scale accessories included with this set. Note that the hands for holding the shield has magnets in them and they are the ones without the metallic looking brackets on the back of the palms.

The included Instructions Sheet tells you that the shield is made of die-cast metal and contains magnetic components. The indicated palms also contain magnets, as does the uniform / costume where indicated i.e. back and forearms. You are advised not to place or store the magnetic parts hear batteries, computers, credit cards or other electronic devices as the magnetic field might affect and damage the items mentioned. I think a lot of us already have our credit cards (and bank accounts) damaged by Hot Toys prices LOL

There are also instructions on how to wield the shield and how the shield will attach to the magnets on the forearm and shield wielding palms / hands as well as back of the figure. Slight caution on switching of the interchangeable head sculpts is advised and no attempt should be made to remove the non-detachable parts. There are also instructions on the removal of the belt although I don't understand the need for that.

Here's Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series MMS281 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 1/6th scale Captain America Collectible Figure out of the tray, with pair of gloved fists. The figure comes with an approximately 31 cm tall body with over 30 points of articulations. As already mentioned and worth saying again, magnets are embedded in the figure’s forearms and back for holding his shield. In the pictures below, the shield is attached to his back and it stays in place very well without dropping or falling off.

Captain America's costume consists of: one blue embossed patterned uniform with star emblem and red and white patterns, a pair of blue embossed patterned pants with pouches, knee pads, and red trims, one brown leather-like back shield holder and body strap, a brown leather-like belt with pouches, and a pair of black and brown boots.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" takes place after "Captain America: Winter Soldier". SHIELD is no more and the Avengers continue their fight to rid the world of terrorist organisation Hydra, hence the Avengers logo on Cap's costume. When Maria Hill called Tony Stark "boss", he points to Captain America and says "Actually he's the boss. I just pay for everything and design everything, make everyone look cooler." Captain America's costume does look pretty cool!

Here's a look at Captain America's back with shield (picture above) and without shield (picture below). The wonder of magnets :) so simple and effective. I like it!

If I have to nitpick Caps' costume, I would have to say I don't quite fancy the boots. It looks like the gaiters worn by the G.I. Joes who fought in World War II which are outdated and not in line with current trends. They don't seem to go with the rest of the design.

Check out Hot Toys amazing, realistic and life-like newly painted helmeted 1/6th scale head sculpt of Chris Evans as Captain America in Avengers: Age of Ultron, with movie-accurate facial expression including detailed wrinkles and skin texture. You can tell it's him even with the helmet on. Also examine the highly detailed Captain America costume.

Note the magnets on the forearm. Interestingly, the gloved hands (with magnets) for holding the shield do not have the visible "metallic" brackets on the gloves.

Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series MMS281 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" 12-inch Captain America Collectible Figure 1/6th scale accessories include: Specially-designed figure stand with Captain America nameplate and the movie logo, Captain America helmet, magnetic metal circular red and blue Captain America shield with retractable handles, newly painted unhelmeted head sculpt of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America, a pair of relaxed palms, a pair of shield holding palms with magnets, shield throwing right palm, and shield catching left palm.
