Hot Toys Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer Review

Nothing beats having the actual thing in hand - Hot Toys MMS72 (Movie Masterpiece Series) 1/6 scale 12-inch collector's edition Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer with Arnold Schwarzenegger's likeness. Man, I've been waiting edges for this, ever since companies have been producing Terminator 12-inch figures of Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's like, why no Arnold as Dutch? From playing "The Terminator (1984)" to fighting The "Predator (1987)" to becoming the 'Governator', he has certainly come a long way from Austria. When I first posted about him (link here), it was way back in June 2008!

Nice packaging by Hot Toys, as always. First the slipcase with landscape orientation

Back of slipcase

The actual box cover featuring the thermal image of Dutch as seen by the Predator. Inner flap reads: Recruited by the CIA to rescue hostages held by guerilla fighters in a Central American country, Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer and his men encounter an enemy unimaginably more deadly than any on Earth - because the Predator is not of this Earth.

Back of box showing all three figures from the Predator series as previewed earlier (link here)

Tray containing 1/6 Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer collectible figure as well as his weapons and accessories

IMPORTANT NOTE: Instruction sheet (referred as "Manual") clearly indicating that this Hot Toys Muscular Body figure is not as articulated as the standard/normal type and one must be extremely cautious when posing said action figure. Meaning: if you break it, don't "cowpeh" lah! For non-Singlish speaking readers, "don't cowpeh lah" means "DON'T go crying to your father OR complain!" because Hot Toys will only say, "I told you so."

Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer's weapons of choice: M16A1 assault rifle mounted with M203 40mm Grenade Launcher (movable front sights for M203, movable dust cover on M16A1, one removable 30-round magazine, Colt M1911A1 .45 pistol with removable magazine (no sliding breech nor movable hammer) - in the movie, Dillon is briefly seen with an M1911A1 pistol whereas Billy, Dutch and Mac were seen with IMI Desert Eagle handguns holstered as their sidearms. Dutch keeps his in a hip holster while Billy and Mac use shoulder holsters. Dutch also has two M67 "Baseball" hand grenades and two mean looking knives - one long (combat knife) and the other longer (machete)!!

Hot Toys 1/6 scale 12-inch Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer without his vest and jacket, showing off his bulging and rippling muscles with his Woodlands camouflage tank top and trousers with belt and buckle plus his web belt for his holster and sheath.

The other accessories include the spare left hand for holding his cigar

I've seen the sculpt and it is GOOD!!

Another look at the Hot Toys muscular body

"If it bleeds, we can kill it."
Interesting jacket design by Hot Toys - it is held together by a snap button and velcro fasteners. The zipper is for show as it cannot be fastened even though Hot Toys bothered to make the pull tab 1/6 scale. Wonder why they do that?

Dutch: Stick around.
Mine's BIGGER than yours! Dutch with machete

Dutch with his pistol. Pistol-wise, in terms of 1/6 scale, Soldier Story wins Hot Toys totally (To view the exceptional quality of Soldier Story's 1/6 scale M1911A1 pistol, check out my post here)! Total Recall should be made for Hot Toys' pistols. BTW, "Total Recall (1990)" was another sci-fi action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Dutch armed with his M16A1/M203

There's no mistaking that the head sculpt of Hot Toys Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer is Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Dutch's combat knife kept in its sheath on his web belt. It also has a removable sharpening tool kept in the front of the sheath.

"I'll be back!" - a catch phrase made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger's title character from the 1984 science fiction thriller film "The Terminator." The phrase has become so associated with Schwarzenegger that celebrity impression comedians often recite it in a mock Austrian accent. In addition to being the Terminator's catch phrase, it's also Schwarzenegger's personal catch phrase, and he tries to include it in most of his films and public appearances.

A closer view of Dutch with his M16A1/M203, hip holster for his pistol and sheath for his machete, kept just next to his right calf.

Dutch wears jungle boots for operating in the jungle of Guatemala, before he and his merry men becoming the hunted instead of the hunter

Hot Toys MMS72 Collector's Edition Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer IMHO is another coup for Hot Toys - WELL DONE!!

You still don't understand, Dillon, do you? Whatever it is out there, it killed Hopper, and now it wants us.

yeah adrian but i guess Dutch didn't really carry a lot with him into the jungle BUT a Desert Eagle would have been real NICE :)

wow very nice figure... i miss out on the Terminator figure hope they make another one :(
My only concern is the muscle body, hope they just did an ordinary type body for flexibility...
buy loose or boxed??? still deciding.
i see headsculpts for sale but the price wow same as a new whole figure!!!

thanks, i liked the figure the minute i saw the preview pictures - arnold as dutch has been on my wish list for far too long. i think Hot Toys was going for realism when they issued him with the muscle body as there are no clear joints and if taken under the right lighting and environment, he'll look REAL!

i bought him boxed as i wanted all of him and not just parts. if someone was selling him loose but complete at a much lower price, i'll definitely buy him loose as i buy to display and don't really need the box but demand for Hot Toys is very high and if you don't pre-order him, he's gonna be hard to get and the price will keep going up and up!

Alex, what do you do / use to preserve the life-span of the rubber bodies? Many thanks. Cheers! - Steve-

alex teo said...

Hi Steve, there's not much I can do except keep the figure away from direct sunlight. I just enjoy the figure for what it's worth and hope for the best. Only time will tell; I've learnt over the years of collecting that nothing in this world lasts forever CHEERS

The sculpt for Dutch's face is really great, one of the best from Hot Toys I have seen... But isn't the head abit big even for the muscular body? It looks abit out of proportion.. I know I am asking for too much though... This is already a great figure and prices seem to be quite high on eBay...

alex teo said...

sorry about that ATF, perhaps its my poor photography skills. somebody told me recently that I place the camera too close to the figure and as a result, there's a fisheye effect which makes the figure's head appear bigger than it should be. I've been correcting that in my latest posts by zooming in instead. It gives a more accurate view and angle. As far as I can tell, Dutch looks GREAT and that isn't any proportion issues CHEERS

AmazingToyFigures said...

Hi Alex, I see...Wow, thanks for the clarification... Now my expectations for this figure have been raised so much... If the head is not out of proportion I must say that he definitely looks great... Lets see if I can hunt him down for a reasonable price.. Maybe a second hand one that some collector trying to offload... I can only hope...

alex teo said...

Glad I could clear your doubts ;p All the best with your hunt for this mighty FINE Dutch figure CHEERS
