Ultraman is a Japanese tokusatsu television series that first aired in 1966. Ultraman staunchly defends Earth against aliens and monsters (called kaiju in Japan), with Shin Hayata and the SSSP (Science Special Search Party) assisting him. Shin Hayata's body hosts Ultraman until he is needed. When Ultraman first appears, his "color timer," or "warning light," is always a rich cyan color. Get a glimpse of 12' Hero's MEISTER 1/6th scale ULTRAMAN SUIT 7.2 aka "Seven" 30cm figure

Ultra Seven (ウルトラセブン Urutora Sebun) is a tokusatsu science fiction TV series that aired on Japanese TV in 1967. Created by Eiji Tsuburaya, this follow up to Ultraman went on to become one of Japan's greatest fantasy TV series. Such is his popularity that "Ultraseven" (or simply "Seven") has appeared or at least made cameos in nearly every Ultra Series following his own and has had far more exposure than even the original Ultraman (though the original Ultraman is without a doubt the face of the Ultras).

Ultra Seven was not only visually different from the first Ultraman (being mostly red with a removable crest/weapon and more 'boxy'-looking eyes), Ultra Seven also did not possess a mortally injured human to use as his host but instead used his powers to scan a brave human that he had saved from being fatally injured and used that human as a template to create a human form for him to shift into. Thus, Dan Moroboshi literally IS Ultra Seven while the original Ultraman would instead merge into the body of Shin Hayata to make two beings into one.

Ultraman has undergone some changes and there has been a renewing of Ultraman with a revised look (see my earlier toy blog post HERE). Now it looks like Ultra Seven is also getting a makeover! 12' Hero's MEISTER 1/6th scale ULTRAMAN SUIT 7.2 aka "Seven" 30cm figure maintains the red and silver look and is equipped with a LED light-up mechanism in the head! He has a Supeshiumusodo and sheath which is comparable to the entire length of the Seven body. Also comes with throwing knives and interchangeable hand parts.

Captain Action Announces Ultraman Outfit “Long Lost” collectible to be produced in Japan after 50 years New York, N.Y. (January 16, 2016): Captain Action Enterprises, LLC is proud to announce a partnership with MEDICOM TOY CORPORATION to produce the long-lost Ultraman outfit.

This uniform set was planned to be a part of the popular super-hero line of costume sets to be used in conjunction with the iconic 12” (30 cm) Captain Action figure. An image of this outfit was shown only once in Shonen (Magazine) in the 1960s and was designed to be a contest prize for the readers. To many modern fans, it was surprising to know such thing existed!

“For Captain Action’s launch in Japan, Nippon Ideal made plans to give Captain Action an Ultraman costume. However, events conspired to prevent the Ultraman costume from becoming a reality, but not before pictures of it had appeared in articles about Captain Action in several issues of “Shonen (Magazine)” (“Boys Magazine”). For decades, fans of both Ultraman and Captain Action have looked at those few grainy pictures and wished that the Ultraman costume had been released to toy stores,” said James Long, a Japanese Anime and Tokusatsu Historian and fan of Captain Action.

This new Ultraman outfit will be released as a part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of Captain Action.

August 2015 Haul #2: Hot Toys 1/6 Commando, Batman, Catwoman, Ultraman and Firefighter

August is almost coming to an end but not before I post my second haul of toys / action figures I managed to grab hold of before the month ends :) This simply translates to more fun stuff to post and more action figures to review on my toy blog. Among the stuff I got are: Hot Toys MMS276 1/6th scale John Matrix Collectible Figure from the 1985 American action thriller movie Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (preview pictures posted HERE), DC Collectibles Batman action figure from The New Batman Adventures animated series, Bandai Ultra-Act X S.H.Figuarts Ultraman action figure and the Playmobil 5367 City Action Special Forces Firefighter figure.

Commando was a box office success grossing over $57.5 million against a $10 million budget. The film debuted at number one on October 6, 1985 in the United States and spent three consecutive weeks at the top position. The original concept was for an Israeli special forces–Mossad agent who, sick of the continual death and destruction in the Middle East, emigrates from Israel to the United States, where he is forced out of his self-imposed retirement after his daughter is kidnapped. This was modified and further adapted when Schwarzenegger was cast; some of the original dialogue can be heard in the deleted scenes when Matrix says he regrets his past actions. Arnold Schwarzenegger portrays Col. John Matrix, a retired Delta Force operator who returns to battle to rescue his daughter who has been kidnapped.

There's going to be a new 12-inch Ultraman in town!

Shinjiro Hayata (早田 進次郎 Hayata Shinjirō) is the son of Shin Hayata, the protagonist of the Ultraman manga, who due to his father's merger with Ultraman, gained Ultra Genes he later passed on to his son. A somewhat lonely boy with a good heart, Shinjiro carries on his father's legacy as Ultraman. The manga is published in HERO magazine and is a seinen, meaning that the story is intended to be mature and dark.

"12'Hero's Meister" is a new brand bringing characters from  Monthly Comic Magazine HERO'S into figures in the standard size: 12 inches. With Sentinel's unique design and manufacture technique, the action figures' full craftsmanship will be presented.

The first character in this series will be the Ultraman of the dawning era: "Shinjiro Hayata", son of the first Ultraman "Shin Hayata", wearing the modern ultra-suit to be the next Ultraman. More poseable than other present 12-inch series and heftily presented by the die-cast material used; in addition the LED lighting gimmicks on each part make this action figure the last word on Ultraman.

Preview World Box [LAKOR BABY] Ultraman baby of new hope 1/6 scale collectible figure

This is the latest announcement by World Box on their [LAKOR BABY] Ultraman baby of new hope, Item Number: 004, Product Type: Action Figure, Product Size: 6" Height (approx. 150mm). The figure features 1/6 scale head, body (150mm), Ultraman mask, Battle suit, gloves x 2 pairs, boots x 1 pair, Bracelet x 1, miniature Human figure, Godzilla baby, Building.

World Box has already released the Lakor Baby Joker, Lakor Bat Baby and Lakor Iron Baby with Scout GO coming soon. This makes it their fifth figure but fourth in their Lakor Baby series. It's certainly a move away from the Avengers line when you consider that World Box released the pair of Joker and Bat Baby and then followed that up with Iron Baby. One would expect them to go on and finish the Avengers line-up but it looks like it's not going in that direction. Instead we get the Ultraman Baby figure.

A bit confused with this particular figure. Is he supposed to be Ultraman Baby since he comes with a miniature human figure and building plus Godzilla baby or is he just a regular kid wearing the Ultraman costume because he plays with kitchen utensils? Lim lau peh or "Who's your daddy?" i.e. Happy Father's Day to all toy collectors who are dads

This toy blog post / entry was published earlier on June 21, 2009 but is just as appropriate today as it was three years ago :) Wishing Happy Father's Day to all fathers and fellow collectors. As long as fathers are not shy to play with toys, we'll always stay young at heart and connected to our children. It doesn't mean that when you become a dad, you have to stop playing with toys. In fact, it was when I became a father that my passion for toys was rekindled and that happened in 1994 ;p

Today being Father's Day, I thought this post would be most appropriate. It is dedicated to fathers everywhere, me being a dad to two rascals, Jared who is 15 and Javon who will be 12 in December. The joy of fatherhood cannot be explained or understood unless you become a father yourself and experience the joys of bringing up your very own.

"Lim lau peh" is hokkien for "your old man/father" just as the popular phrase "lim peh ka li kong" means "let your father tell you" or "listen to your father" - a phrase meant to put you in your place, used even when the speaker is not actually the addressee's father. (source: the Coxford Singlish Dictionary - a good read, "sure damn funny one!")

We all remember the following scene from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" where Indiana Jones (played by Harrison Ford) is captured together with his father Professor Henry Jones Sr (played by Sean Connery) after being betrayed by Elsa when Indy goes to rescue Jones Sr at a castle on the Austrian-German border.

[Indiana and Henry are tied up]
Indiana Jones: Come on, dad. Help me get us out of here. We have to get to Marcus before the Nazis do.
Professor Henry Jones: But you said he had a two day head start. That he would blend in, disappear.
Indiana Jones: Are you kidding? I made all that up. You know Marcus. He once got lost in his own museum.

Today is Valentine's Day and this is for my lovely wife Daisy who has been my most loyal supporter forever. Since we both don't buy into the commercial practice of paying many many times more for something that is already dying (the flower just doesn't know it yet) and which usually cost a lot less at other times (a rose is a rose is a rose is a rose except on Valentine's when it can cost you an arm and a leg), this seems more meaningful in a weird kind of way. (I mean no disrespect to all those who did purchase flowers for their better half as I believe it's a sweet thing to do, it's just personal between the wife and me.)

Medicom Madness

Before Hot Toys and Sideshow came on the scene and offered us better 1/6 head sculpts and quality plus value for money products (for Hot Toys, it's all their movie masterpiece series figures and for Sideshow, it's their Star Wars armored figures - 1/6 stormtroopers etc), there was Medicom. Medicom is over-priced and below par for their quality (some of their bodies have broken apart and self-destruct for no apparent reasons and some have experienced torn costumes or costumes coming apart at the seams).

However, if you are into 1/6 scale Japanese anime, manga and tokusatsu (live action films with special effects), then Medicom still rules supreme in this area - sad but true. Here are some of the tokusatsu figures I grew up with in the 1970s - ULTRAMAN

Medicom RAH Father of Ultra

Father of Ultra (ウルトラの父 Urutora no Chichi), also called Ultra Father, is the ruler of the Land of Light in Nebula M78, where most of the Ultra beings come from. He first appeared in Episode 27 of Ultraman Ace. He is in fact the actual father of Ultraman Taro, supposedly one of the most powerful of the Ultramen, although he seems to get killed a lot and receives a lot of help from his mother, father and all of his brothers. (Ultraman Taro gets his head chopped off by Enmargo in Episode 14 and gets killed by Birdon in Episode 18)

Other than Ultraman King, Ultra Father is the only other Ultra being who wears a belt

Medicom RAH 12-inch Father of Ultra comes with the usual extra pair of hands (clenched fist and open palm) plus an extra grasping hand

The grasping hand is for holding the Ultra Array, a cylindrical rod with two spherical light-emitters at the ends. It could temporarily blind an enemy's eyes. He also has a power beam, the Father Shot, fired by placing his arms in an "L"-shaped manner, similar to all the other Ultras. The manga "Ultraman Super Warrior Legend" also mentions of a beam that comes from Ultra Father's horns.

Medicom's Ultra Array is detachable so that you can make Father Ultra hold onto his weapon as the grasping hands are molded shut or closed.

Being a much senior or elder Ultra being, I think the arthropod mandible looking things at the side of his head/face are supposed to be beard, to represent an aged person. They are very pronounced and distinct, and looks too much like a extra piece deliberately added on, unlike TV images which show that it is very much part of the head/face/helmet (more like a growth and part of the body's process of ageing)

Ultra Father also looks like he has man boobs, still perky after all these years (He is supposed to be 160,000 Earth years old)

In this modern age of digital animation, the character would probably be a computer generated animation without the zipper so that he would look like a being and not a man in a costume. But being tokusatsu (live action with special effects), I liked that there was the zipper (very retro, if you know what I mean).

Because of the zip, the belt doesn't go around but stops in the middle - now we know why the rest of the Ultras had no belts, it would look odd. Medicom even replicated the small zippers on his gloves and boots.

Ultra Father also has a color timer on his chest. The Ultra beings' main weakness is that they can only stay on Earth in giant form for a limited span of time, usually not longer than three minutes, owing to a limited supply of energy (Earth's  atmosphere filters out solar energy). This is marked by a light on their chest, usually called the Color Timer, or "warning light," which eventually begins to blink with increasing frequency as his energy supply dwindles (turning from blue to red).

Ultra Father once saved Ultraman Ace and the other Ultra brothers by sending the energy of his Color Timer into them. They then defeated Hipporito and returned Ultra Father to Nebula M78 for a recharge in the proverbial nick of time.

Another fine 12-inch addition to the Ultras. I think this is the only costumed and articulated 12-inch action figure of Ultra Father to have ever been produced. Now my collection of the Ultra beings of the Showa era is nearly complete :) It has taken me more than ten years since I started collecting 12-inch Ultraman in 1994 to even imagine that all these Ultra beings would be produced.
