Hot Toys F-18 Hornet Pilot "Alan J Nance" looks a lot like Will Smith as CPT Steven Hiller in ID4

continued from previous toy blog post...

Hot Toys released this F-18 Hornet Pilot "Alan J Nance" (the head sculpt bears a resemblance to Will Smith who acted as F/A-18 pilot CPT Steven Hiller in the movie "Independence Day or ID4") together with an F-14 Tomcat "Jack Carter" pilot figure (Tom Cruise in "Top Gun" - action figure review posted HERE) way back in the year 2000. These two figures were Hot Toys' first 12-inch figures to be released into the market. Hot Toys has certainly come a long way since.

Will Smith went from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to F-18 Hornet Pilot in 1996 with the release of Independence Day. The film was a massive blockbuster, becoming the second highest grossing film in history at the time and establishing Smith as a prime box office draw. This 1/6th scale F-18 pilot figure, though released in 2000, seems to have withstood the test of time. The 12-inch figure still looks as good now and has all the nice details one would expect from a combat pilot figure.

Happy July Fourth! Blast from the Past with Independence Day Electronic Alien Attacker

Happy Independence Day to all my American friends :)

Independence Day of the United States, also referred to as the Fourth of July or July Fourth in the U.S., is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire.

The film "Independence Day" (sometimes styled as ID4) is a 1996 American epic, science fiction film directed and co-written by Roland Emmerich and starring: Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsch, Margaret Colin, Randy Quaid, Robert Loggia, James Rebhorn, Vivica A. Fox and Harry Connick Jr. It focuses on disparate groups of people who converge in the Nevada desert in the aftermath of a calamitous attack by a seemingly powerful extraterrestrial race from an unknown origin and, along with the rest of the human population, participate in a last-chance counterattack on July 4 – the same date as the Independence Day in the United States.

I never imagined that twenty years later, there would be a sequel, "Independence Day: Resurgence" but there is and it was released on June 24, 2016. The film focuses on the battle between ESD (Earth Space Defense), an international military defense and research organization, and the returning alien invaders during the twentieth anniversary of humanity’s first victory against the latter on July 4 – the same date as the Independence Day in the United States. Unlike the first film, there are no toys or movie merchandise to flood the market this time around. Generally, I think most companies are quite cautious of merchandise that tie-in with movies these days and you really don't see a lot of toys being released to go with a movie, unless they are films released by Disney.

This is the Trendmasters ID4 electronic Alien Attack space craft. It was made in 1996 for the independence day movie and features electronic lights and sounds plus an opening cockpit, shooting missiles and dropping bombs. I was pleasantly pleased that the electronic lights and sounds still work :) So glad I remembered to take the batteries out when I decided to display and not play with the electronic features. Never forget the Hot Toy Collecting Tip #1: Remove ALL Batteries! - check out the toy blog post HERE

E&S (Easy & Simple) SKU#26007A Special Mission Unit Tier-1 Operator Bragg & Dam Neck

E&S (Easy & Simple) SKU#26007A Special Mission Unit Tier-1 Operator Bragg and SKU#26007B Special Mission Unit Tier-1 Operator Dam Neck upcoming 12-inch action figures look like they are a pair of warriors caught in a time warp who landed in the wrong galaxy at the wrong time. They both come with a ton of accessories and are sold separately but when you get a good look at their 1/6th scale head sculpts, you might just want to get the pair as a set because a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, they travelled to Naboo to negotiate with the Trade Federation leadership to end a blockade of battleships around the planet. What's most interesting is that they both also come with light sabers ;p

I think E&S is quite clever in coming up with the head sculpts for these two operators. They make a fine pair together although in real life, Liam Neeson would have been much taller than Ewan McGregor. In the 1999 American epic space opera film "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace", Liam Neeson is cast as Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi Master and mentor to Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor.

Review 1: THREEQ 1/6 scale CITIES RANGER 12" figure aka Stephen Amell as Green Arrow

This was part of my June 2016 haul (see the toy blog post HERE)

Arrow is an American television series developed by writer/producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg. It is based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, a costumed crime-fighter created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp. It premiered in North America on The CW on October 10, 2012, with international broadcasting taking place in late 2012. The series follows billionaire playboy Oliver Queen, portrayed by Stephen Amell, who, five years after being stranded on a hostile island, returns home to fight crime and corruption as a secret vigilante whose weapon of choice is a bow and arrow.

Unlike in the comic books, Queen does not go by the alias "Green Arrow" until the fourth season. Stephen Amell portrays Oliver Queen / Green Arrow, a billionaire playboy turned hooded vigilante-hero formerly known as the "Hood", "Vigilante", and simply "Arrow".

This is the recently released THREEQ TQ1001 1/6th scale CITIES RANGER 12-inch action figure and he certainly looks a lot like Stephen Amell as the Arrow. In the second half of season two, Oliver replaces his "paint" mask with a domino mask, similar to one worn by the character in the comics. Oliver receives the mask from Barry Allen (who later becomes The Flash), who is able to create a mask that will help conceal his identity, while still being functional and allowing Oliver to see clearly. The realistic approach to the series included the costume design. According to Amell, it was important for the suit to be functional, and the best way that he knew for that was if he could put the costume on by himself: "If I can put it on by myself, I think that people will buy it. And that was our idea. That’s our world."

Review II: Bandai Tamashii Exclusive - Star Wars Movie Realization - Akonaze Royal Guard figure

continued from previous toy blog post...

My second-part action figure review of the recently released Bandai Tamashii Exclusive Star Wars Movie Realizatio Akonaze Royal Guard shows the figure without his "robe" in front. The front part of his robe (shown in the earlier action figure review post HERE) is detachable to show off the armor hidden underneath this Feudal Japan Samurai inspired redesign of the Star Wars Episode VI Emperor's Royal Guard. The Imperial Royal Guard or Imperial Guard, were the personal bodyguards and assassins of Emperor Palpatine.

Royal Guards were completely covered in flowing blood-red robes and featureless scarlet masks concealed their faces. They wielded force pikes, a type of melee weapon with a vibro-edged head. Additionally, each of their robes also hid a heavy blaster pistol, a vibroblade, and various other weaponry. This Bandai Tamashii Exclusive - Star Wars Movie Realization - Akonaze Royal Guard figure comes equipped with a Samurai sword instead of a blaster. There is the wakizashi, the companion sword, being carried in front but the sword is not detachable. The katana was the big or long sword and the wakizashi was used as a backup or auxiliary sword. It was also used for close quarters fighting, to behead a defeated opponent and sometimes to commit seppuku, a ritual suicide. The wakizashi being worn together with the katana was the official sign that the wearer was a samurai or swordsman of feudal Japan. When worn together the pair of swords were called daishō, which translates literally as "big-little".

What if the Joker was a girl? Presenting WOLF KING 1/6th scale Female Clown 12-inch figure

The question to ask is: What if the Joker was a girl in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight", the second part of Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins? No disrespect to Heath Ledger, who made the character his very own and helped tremendously in making what film critics consider to be one of the best films of the 2000s and one of the best superhero films ever!

WOLFKING seems to have the answer. This is WOLFKING 1/6th scale Female Clown 12-inch figure and she is none other than a female version of Heath Ledger's JOKER as seen in "The Dark Knight". WOLFKING 1/6th scale Female Clown 12-inch figure will come with female head sculpt with rooted hair, female Body with over 28 points of articulations, 4 pieces of interchangeable gloved hands, overcoat, vest, shirt, tie, skirt, pair of silk stockings, pair of leather shoes, 10 cards, dagger, handgun with clip, Stubby Shotgun.

Bandai Tamashii Exclusive - Star Wars Movie Realization - Akonaze Royal Guard action figure

The Emperor's Royal Guard, known under the Republic as the Red Guard and under the Empire as the Imperial Royal Guard or Imperial Guard, were the personal bodyguards and assassins of Sheev Palpatine. Armed with force pikes and fully clad in their anonymous helmets and crimson robes, the Royal Guard were silent, imposing, and deadly. Those who proved themselves to be the most promising of the Imperial military were selected for duty as a Royal Guard and had to fulfill stringent requirements based on size, strength, intelligence, and loyalty to the Emperor.

The Emperor's Guards first appeared in the 1983 movie "Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi". The conceptual drawings varied from centurion-like warriors to priest-like monks, but a common thread tying those designs together was the deep red hue.

This Bandai Tamashii Exclusive Star Wars Movie Realizatio Akonaze Royal Guard action figure is a Samurai inspired version of the popular Star Wars character. I have collected quite a number of these Bandai produced Samurai-styled Star Wars figures including the Samurai Taisho Darth Vader and Ronin Kenzan Boba Fett 7-inch action figures (posted on my toy blog HERE) and Teppo Ashigaru Sandtrooper plus Ashigaru Stormtrooper action figures (pictures HERE). This is a nice addition to the ranks of Star Wars Samurai inspired figures.

Hot Toys "Star Wars: A New Hope" 1/6th scale Princess Leia and Sideshow Collectibles R2-D2

continued from previous toy blog post...

"Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.”

While on a secret mission to summon the aid of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia is trapped onboard her diplomatic starship, Tantive IV. Knowing she will be captured, she nonetheless fights to the end, and does what she can to ensure that her message will reach Obi-Wan, via R2-D2, even if she herself cannot.

This is my attempt at replicating one of the iconic scenes from the Star Wars film that was released back in May 1977. Princess Leia passes a message to Obi-Wan Kenobi through R2-D2. From here, we follow the astromech droid as it leaves the starship via an escape pod and brings the message first to Luke Skywalker and then to its intended recipient, Obi-Wan Kenobi. From there, we follow the old Jedi Knight and his young friend as they board the Millennium Falcon belonging to Han Solo and Chewbacca, along with the two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO. The plan was to deliver the blue-prints of the Imperial Death Star super weapon to the Rebel Alliance. But we know how things don't always go the way we planned.

This reenactment is possible by putting the Hot Toys MMS298 "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" 1/6th scale Carrier Fisher as Princess Leia 28cm tall Collectible Figure with Sideshow Collectibles Star Wars 1/6th scale R2-D2 Deluxe Figure. Preview of First Gokin Oraku Saki 9.5-inch tall action figure is none other than TMNT Shredder

The Shredder (Oroku Saki) is a fictional character in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and all of its related media. At one point or another in every incarnation of the TMNT stories, he has been the archenemy of Splinter and the Turtles, and usually serves as the main antagonist. He is the leader of the criminal organization known as the Foot Clan.

Shredder's physical appearance remains fairly consistent in most incarnations of the character. Saki is a muscular Japanese man, most frequently seen in "the Shredder" persona, wearing a suit of armor vaguely based on that of a samurai, sometimes with a cape. The armor consists of blade-covered metal plaques on his shoulders, forearms, hands (sometimes just his left hand, because he is left-handed), and shins. He also tends to wear a metal helmet with a trident-shaped ornament on top, and a metal ninja style mask which covers his face, leaving only his eyes visible.

Check out the promotional images for First Gokin’s Oraku Saki action figure. Oraku Saki features a removable helmet and weapons. Saki is articulated and even features some die-cast parts. Standing at approximately 9.5″ tall and featuring accessories compatible with the TMNT Classics action figures, the Oraku Saki figure is expected to ship later this year, priced USD$129.98.

Phicen PL2014-66 1st Ever 1/6th scale Steve Reeves as Hercules Seamless Action Figure

Half man, half god… ALL HERO!

Hercules is a 1958 Italian epic fantasy, peplum genre film based upon the Hercules and the Quest for the Golden Fleece myths. The film stars Steve Reeves as the titular hero and Sylva Koscina as his love interest Princess Iole. Hercules made Reeves an international film star and effectively paved the way for the dozens of 1960s peplum (or "sword and sandal") films featuring bodybuilder actors as mythological heroes and gladiators battling monsters, despots, and evil queens.

Hercules’ mother was a mortal, but his father was Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. Jealous of Hercules, Zeus' wife, the goddess Hera, tried to kill him as a baby by sending serpents into his crib. But Hercules was a born fighter and crushed them with his bare hands. Throughout time and around the world, Hercules has been depicted in ancient art, tapestries, statues, paintings, comics, cartoons, and feature films.

Of the countless iterations, there is one that stands out as being the most iconic, indelible and imitated. It is Steve Reeves as Hercules! Reeves iconic portrayal of Hercules set the standard for this heroic character, launched a genre of ‘sword & sandals’ films, and defined the modern day action star.

Hollywood legend Steve Reeves film, stage, and television career spanned three decades. Off screen, Steve Reeves inspired thousands worldwide as an internationally titled bodybuilder, philanthropist, and proponent of health and fitness.

Star Ace Toys officially licensed SA-0037 1/6th scale "UnderWorld: Evolution" Viktor 12" figure

Underworld: Evolution is a 2006 American action horror film directed by Len Wiseman. It is the second (chronologically, the third) instalment in the Underworld series, following Underworld (2003). The events of the film begin during the same night of the first film's finale. In the film, Selene and Michael fight to protect the future of the Corvinus bloodline from its hidden past.

Bill Nighy is cast as Viktor, a Vampire Elder. Viktor was a Hungarian general and warlord born sometime in the 4th or early 5th century. As he was nearing the end of his life, Markus Corvinus, the first true Vampire, offered immortality in exchange for Viktor's military expertise and army in fighting against the Werewolves, spawn of Markus' own twin brother, William. When Markus turned Viktor, the general became a Vampire Elder. The Death Dealers were created from Viktor's army. Viktor is a ruthless Vampire Elder with his armies loyal to him, he overthrew the original Vampire Markus and set himself up in Vampire myth as the first Vampire. Viktor was the most powerful Vampire ever to have lived mostly because his manipulation, experience, and cunning far surpassed the other Elders. He is killed by Selene who cuts his head in half with his own sword.

Star Ace Toys officially licensed SA-0037 1/6th scale "UnderWorld: Evolution" Viktor Collectible figure features: Fully realized authentic likeness of Viktor in the movie “UNDERWORLD” with accurate facial expression and detailed skin texture | 1:6th scale body, approximately 30 cm tall with over 30 points of articulation | Four (4) interchangeable hands including: One (1) pair of open hands, One (1) right hand for holding Sword / daggers, One (1) left hand for holding daggers.

I think this is the first time I've seen a company produce an older person's body in 1:6 scale with all the wrinkles and saggy skin. Looks very realistic and life-like. Hot Toys Terminator Genisys 1/6th scale Arnold Schwarzenegger as T-800 Guardian Collectible Figure certainly didn't show off this body (preview pictures HERE)

Hot Toys "Star Wars: A New Hope" 1/6th scale Princess Leia 28cm Collectible Figure Review II

continued from previous toy blog post...

Princess Leia never came across as a damsel in distress. She might be wearing the traditional gown of the Alderaan royal family when she was captured on her consular ship Tantive IV but she was all ready to do battle once Luke Skywalker and Han Solo broke her out of her prison cell. In fact she was the one that got them out of a fix when they were cut off from their only escape route by Stormtroopers once their jail break attempt was discovered. She grabbed a E-11 BlasTech Standard Imperial Sidearm / Stormtrooper Blaster Rifle and shot a hole in a garbage chute and told everyone to dive in to escape the Imperials.

Here's Hot Toys MMS298 "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" 1/6th scale Carrier Fisher as Princess Leia Collectible Figure with the blaster that came with the boxed set. The earlier review covered the Princess with her pistol, a "Drearian Defense Conglomerate Defender sporting blaster pistol". It is actually a Vostok Margolin .22LR target pistol, with some muzzle attachment fitted, selected for its diminutive size, keeping the prop gun from looking too bulky and unwieldy in Fisher's petite hands.

Review 1: Hot Toys "Star Wars: A New Hope" 1/6th scale Princess Leia Collectible Figure

This was part of my May 2016 haul - see the toy blog post HERE

Introduced in the original Star Wars film (1977), Leia is princess of the planet Alderaan, a member of the Imperial Senate and an agent of the Rebel Alliance. She thwarts the sinister Sith Lord Darth Vader and helps bring about the destruction of the Empire's cataclysmic weapon, the Death Star. Princess Leia Organa is portrayed in films by Carrie Fisher.

This is the recently released Hot Toys MMS298 "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" 1/6th scale Princess Leia Collectible Figure. It features: Authentic and detailed likeness of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" with Newly developed head sculpt with movie-accurate facial expression and make-up, Detailed hair sculpture of Princess Leia’s iconic hair style; Approximately 26 cm tall Body with over 28 points of articulations; Five (5) pieces of interchangeable palms including: One (1) pair of relaxed palms, One (1) pair of weapon holding palms, One (1) left palm for supporting weapon

Having gotten the Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series MMS297 "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" 1/6th scale Luke Skywalker collectible figure (check out the action figure review posted HERE, HERE and HERE), Hot Toys MMS261 "Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope" 1/6th scale Han Solo (covered HERE and HERE) and Hot Toys MMS262 Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope: 1/6th scale Chewbacca 36 cm tall collectible figure (pictures HERE and HERE), I needed Princess Leia to complete the group. Interestingly, Princess Leia never met Obi-Wan Kenobi face-to-face in the film. The Princess was rescued by the trio of Luke, Han and Chewbacca when Obi-Wan went to disable the tractor beam. He ended up duelling with Darth Vader while Luke and company escaped with the Princess. Obi-Wan Kenobi never made it out of the Death Star physically.

COOMODEL SE004 1/6th scale Empires Series - Richard the Lionheart 12-inch action figure

Richard I (8 September 1157 – 6 April 1199) was King of England from 6 July 1189 until his death. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy (as Richard IV), Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Poitiers, Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Count of Nantes, and Overlord of Brittany at various times during the same period. He was the third of five sons of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was known as Richard Cœur de Lion or Richard the Lionheart because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior.

By the age of 16, Richard had taken command of his own army, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, leading the campaign after the departure of Philip II of France and scoring considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin, although he did not retake Jerusalem from Saladin. Following his accession he spent very little time, perhaps as little as six months, in England; most of his life as king was spent on Crusade, in captivity, or in actively defending his lands in France. Rather than regarding his kingdom as a responsibility requiring his presence as ruler, he has been perceived as preferring to use it merely as a source of revenue to support his armies.

This is the upcoming COOMODEL SE004 1/6th scale Empires Series - Richard the Lionheart Collectible Figure. It is not a historically accurate figure but more of a fantasy figure. The same applies to the earlier previewed COO MODEL 1/6th scale Empire Series - 12 Paladins of Charlemagne Collectible Figure posted on my toy blog HERE. COOMODEL 1/6th scale Richard the Lionheart 12-inch action figure specially features: head sculpt of Richard I of England, upgraded action body, Six (6) Pieces of Interchangeable Palms (2 fists plus 4 palms in silver armor).
