Review 1: Hot Toys MMS267 "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" 1/6 Stormtrooper 12-inch Figure

From "Men in Black" (see my previous toy blog post HERE) to troopers clad in all white armor!

This is the recently released Hot Toys MMS267 "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" 1/6th scale Stormtrooper 12-inch Collectible Figure (part of my April 2015 haul posted HERE)

Stormtroopers are the elite shock troops of the Galactic Empire. They wear imposing white armor, which offers a wide range of survival equipment and temperature controls to allow the soldiers to survive in almost any environment. Stormtroopers wield blaster rifles and pistols, and attack in hordes to overwhelm their enemies. Along with standard Stormtroopers, the Empire has organized several specialized units, including snow-troopers and scout troopers.

Needless to say, the Stormtroopers are one of the most iconic images of the Star Wars saga and I've liked them the moment I saw them appear on the big screen in May 1977. In 1977, it was just called "Star Wars" (no sequel or prequel was even planned then as nobody knew what the response to the film would be like) and when the movie opened with a space battle between two starships in orbit around the desert planet of Tatooine, mouths were left wide open gaping in awe and everyone was just wondering when the mammoth Imperial star destroyer, the Devastator, would stop filling up the screen. Then the small Rebel blockade runner, the Tantive IV, was boarded by stormtroopers from the Empire's 501st Legion.

The design of these Star Wars Imperial Stormtroopers have remained timeless. They never look outdated and anytime you take a look at them, they always remain relevant. The simple yet elegant white armor, the ominous and anonymous helmet / mask have captured all our imagination and they will always look cool as soldiers from a galaxy far far away, never mind that they seem to miss their targets every time they open fire.

There have been quite a number of 1:6 scale Imperial Stormtroopers released over the years – see the links below this post (and I don't count the Hasbro released FAT troopers as one of these) – and this latest 12-inch Stormtrooper figure by Hot Toys certainly deserves some attention.

Check out 303Toys No.: 35003 1/6th scale Qin Soldier with sword (China Qin Dynasty soldiers)

continued from previous post...

This is one of three China Qin Dynasty soldiers 303Toys will be releasing soon. 303Toys No.: 35003 1/6th scale Qin Soldier 12-inch figure with sword (China Qin Dynasty soldiers) will come with 1/6th scale Head sculpt, 12-inch figure Body, Clothes, Pants, Scarf, Shoes, Leg cloth, Armor, Helmet, Sword, Arrow x 3, Arrow basket / Quiver, Hands x 5, Action figure stand.

I'm pretty sure the 1/6th scale head sculpt is of someone famous in Hong Kong, most likely an actor but I just can't seem to place a name to the face. This is the only figure of the three previewed to have a helmet over his head. He also has a sword and seem to carry extra arrows for the crossbow archer previewed earlier.

Preview 303 Toys No.: 35002 1/6th scale Qin Soldiers Crossbow (China Qin Dynasty soldiers)

continued from previous post...

This is one of three China Qin Dynasty soldiers 303Toys will be releasing soon. 303Toys No.: 35002 1/6th scale Qin Soldier 12-inch figure with Crossbow (China Qin Dynasty soldiers) will come with 1/6th scale Head sculpt, 12-inch figure Body, Clothes, Pants, Scarf, Shoes, Leg cloth, Armor, Crossbow, Arrow x 2, Hands x 4, Action figure stand.

The 1/6th scale head sculpt does bear some resemblance to Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen. A crossbow is a type of weapon, based on the bow, consisting of a horizontal bow-like assembly mounted on a stock, that shoots projectiles called bolts or quarrels. Historically, crossbows played a significant role in the warfare of East Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean. The invention of the crossbow in ancient China caused a major shift in the role of projectile weaponry. The crossbow was the first projectile weapon to be simple, cheap and physically-undemanding enough to be operated by large numbers of conscript soldiers, thus enabling virtually any nation to field a potent force of ranged crossbowmen with little expense beyond the cost of the weapons themselves.

303Toys No.:35001 1/6th scale Qin Soldier 12" figure with Spetum (China Qin Dynasty soldiers)

This is one of three China Qin Dynasty soldiers 303Toys will be releasing soon. 303Toys No.: 35001 1/6th scale Qin Soldier 12-inch figure with Spetum (China Qin Dynasty soldiers) will come with 1/6th scale Head sculpt, 12-inch figure Body, Clothes, Pants, Scarf, Shoes, Leg cloth, Armor, Spectum, Shield, Hands x 4, Action figure stand.

The 1/6th scale head sculpt does bear some resemblance to Hong Kong actor Andy Lau. A spetum was a pole weapon used in ancient battles. The design of a spetum is very efficient for combat. The main blade is long enough to destroy any significant organ in the human body with one quick thrust. The blunt backs of the side blades make the spetum extremely useful for a variety of uses such as tripping and knocking aside shields, but more importantly they provide far more strength to the sharpened side and points than is possible with any dual-edged construction.

Review II: 1:6 scale Z.E.R.T. (Zombie Eradication Response Team) Jameson Deathridge Figure

continued from previous post...

I had posted pictures of the box content and all the 1:6 scale accessories, gear and weapons that came with this recently released USA exclusive (production run of only 600 pieces, not sold outside the U.S.) Z.E.R.T. (Zombie Eradication Response Team) 1:6th scale Jameson YoungBlood Deathridge 12-inch Action Figure by E&S (Easy and Simple) in the first part review on my toy blog HERE so now it's time to see how he looks in some action poses.

Z.E.R.T. is an organization that uses “Zombie” as a metaphor for any natural or man-made disasters that will occur in our lives; Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, criminal attacks or any type of situation where being prepared, trained and most importantly, armed with the proper mindset is required to see you and your family through to safety. Z.E.R.T. was officially launched in Las Vegas, November 2011 and now has 10000+ members in 35 different countries! Over 600 of these members are located in Las Vegas Nevada USA.

This 12-inch figure is based off the fictional Z.E.R.T. comic book character. I had a lot of fun putting this guy together. That's the difference between 1:6 scale military collectors and a lot of Hot Toys collectors. I started out on this hobby (1:6 scale modeling a.k.a. Playscale Miniaturism) by collecting 12-inch military figures which meant taking the basic figure out of the box and putting on all his kit and gear. So did Hot Toys founder Howard Chan before he started the company. Hot Toys first foray into the 1:6 scale market was producing and releasing 12-inch military figures (they were releasing uniform sets even before that) and the first Hot Toys 12-inch figure ever released in 2000 was the 1/6th scale F-14 Tomcat aviator / pilot action figure "Jack Carter" who was a dead ringer for a 1:6 scale Tom Cruise as LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell from the 1986 movie "Top Gun" – Check out my post HERE.

Since then, Hot Toys has gone into the movie merchandising business and a lot of people have seen their products, fell in love with them or got poisoned by them depending on how you look at it and given up all their hard earned money for Hot Toys products. Many are hard core Hot Toys collectors but have never tried their hand at 12-inch military figures. 12-inch military figures require quite a bit of assembling and part of the fun is to gear up the figure and put on all his stuff as if you would in real life to yourself because that is what a real operator does. The challenge is assembling all the small tiny parts and trying your utmost best not to break anything in the process. A lot of Hot Toys collectors, on the other hand, simply remove the figure from the box and displays said figure. Any complex assembling has to be already done at the factory and delivered to the Hot Toys collector as a complete product as most of them have never put anything together on a figure before in their lives and probably wouldn't be able to do it if asked to.

The advantage of collecting 12-inch military figures is that when you get to examine and gear up the figure yourself, you get to appreciate all the finer details of the 1:6 scale gear, weapons and accessories, and the kind of load a soldier has to carry into battle, and all the advancements in technology he has at his disposal to give him the upper hand, in the case of the better equipped modern warrior. Case-in-point, this Z.E.R.T. (Zombie Eradication Response Team) 1:6th scale Jameson YoungBlood Deathridge 12-inch Action Figure.

Z.E.R.T. (Zombie Eradication Response Team) 1:6 Jameson Deathridge 12" Figure - Review 1

From warriors of a bygone era (see previous post) to a modern warrior of the current age. This is the recently released USA exclusive Z.E.R.T. (Zombie Eradication Response Team) 1:6th scale Jameson YoungBlood Deathridge 12-inch Action Figure by E&S (Easy and Simple) which has a production run of only 600 pieces and wasn't sold outside the U.S. I was quite happy to score this figure (this was part of my February haul - posted HERE) but I only got to unboxing it recently. You can check out the reviews on my toy blog in this post and the NEXT.

This guy doesn't actually exist. This 12-inch figure is based off the fictional Z.E.R.T. comic book character. In the comic book series, Jameson YoungBlood Deathridge is a retired Force Recon Marine, now working Proliferation Operations for the C.I.A. He is chasing signs of a terrible plague sweeping across the Middle East. Deathridge’s American Special Operations team fights to contain the evil before it spreads.

Sounds familiar? A bit like Brad Pitt's character in the 2013 American disaster zombie film "World War Z" directed by Marc Forster. The film stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator who must travel the world to find a way to stop a zombie pandemic. The same company, E&S also released a 1:6 scale Zombie Survivor set based on Gerry. You can check out my reviews HERE and HERE. While the figure is fictional, the gear and equipment he has on him are all real and accounted for in 1:1 scale. There's even a Z.E.R.T. web page and organization. Z.E.R.T.’s Cadre is made up of Special Forces Instructors who use their vast knowledge and ‘real world’ experience to teach civilian members. Z.E.R.T.’s Cadre has also trained over 100 state and federal officers in 4 states.

For my first-part review of this E&S 1:6 scale Z.E.R.T. (Zombie Eradication Response Team) Jameson YoungBlood Deathridge 12-inch action figure, I have posted 35 pictures... with more to come. What can I say? This figure deserves all the attention. Enjoy :)

Early April 2015 Haul: "X-Men: Days of Future Past" Wolverine & Star Wars 12" Stormtrooper

Picked up these two 12-inch figures for April 2015: Hot Toys MMS264 "X-Men: Days of Future Past" 1/6th scale Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) Collectible Figure and Hot Toys MMS267 "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" 1/6th scale Stormtrooper Collectible Figure.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is a 2014 superhero film based on the fictional X-Men characters that appear in Marvel Comics. Directed by Bryan Singer, it is the seventh installment of the X-Men film series and acts as a sequel to both 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand and 2011's X-Men: First Class. The story, inspired by the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline "Days of Future Past" produced by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, focuses on two time periods and Wolverine going to 1973 to save the future of mankind. The film stars an ensemble cast, including Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart.

So how is it that Hot Toys only produced and released a 1:6 scale Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) figure? What about the rest of the X-Men? Sometime back in 2012, Hot Toys had previewed the 1:6 scale James McAvoy as Charles Xavier / Professor X collectible figure from X-Men: First Class at their exhibitions (you can see the pictures HERE) but it was subsequently cancelled. Looks like there won't be any other mutant being made in 1:6 scale except Wolverine. Hot Toys also only released a 1:6 scale Wolverine from X-Men: The Last Stand - see my toy blog post HERE of the Hot Toys MMS187 "X-Men: The Last Stand" 1/6 scale Wolverine Limited Edition 12-inch Figure.

This Hot Toys MMS267 "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" 1/6th scale Stormtrooper Collectible Figure will be my very first Hot Toys Star Wars 12-inch figure. News that Hot Toys will also be releasing Star Wars figures brought out mixed feelings for me. Sideshow Collectibles hasn't done too bad a job especially with their armored trooper figures. They have also been improving greatly on their head sculpts and Hot Toys' steadily rising prices has not done them any good as far as I am concerned. Still it has been a while since we have seen a good and solid 12-inch Stormtrooper figure so I had to see how Hot Toys Stormtrooper fare.

Beast Kingdom Iron Man Mark XLIV Hulkbuster Life-Size Figure (3m) is NOT an April Fool's joke

First there was the 1/6th scale Hot Toys "Avengers: Age of Ultron" Hulkbuster 21-inch (55 cm) Collectible Figure (previewed HERE). Then there was the 1/4th scale Hot Toys "Avengers: Age of Ultron" Iron Man Mark XLIII 20" (49cm) Collectible Figure (posted HERE). Now there's this: the Beast Kingdom Iron Man Mark XLIV Hulkbuster Life-Size (1:1 scale) Figure which will be 3m high!

Beast Kingdom Toys is proud to present the LS-023 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" Iron Man Mark XLIV Hulkbuster Life Size Figure. The statue features fiberglass construction and automotive paint to perfectly represent the Iron Man armor. Every intricate parts seen in the movie is captured with expert sculpting and individually hand-painted, showing off the highly detailed mechanical construction. The statue has LED lights installed in the Iron Man's eyes, arc reactor, palms, vernier thruster, and knee (18 LED light-up points) that makes Hulkbuster look even more majestic. Every Hulkbuster life-sized statue features a paired with realistic movie scenery lookend base, that shows the unstoppable strength.

The Hulkbuster armor is a heavy-duty exo-frame designed for maximum strength amplification at the cost of reduced versatility and mobility. As its name suggests, it was specifically designed for hand-to-hand combat with the rampaging Hulk. During its maiden run, the armor enabled Stark to hold his own in sustained physical combat with the Hulk.

Presenting some 1:6 Warriors of a bygone era - Spartan, Greek, Romans, Gladiators & Knights

Just some random shots taken while I was cleaning the display shelves. You can see all my display shelves with the 1/6th scale figures inside posted on my toy blog HERE titled "Welcome to my new place!"

Before Man fought with guns, they had to settle matters with swords and shields, bringing the fight to his opponent up close, personal and brutal. The 2007 American fantasy war film "300" which was based on the 1998 comic book series of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley gave us a very visual treat of the graphic violence that could have occurred in the past. Since few records about the actual martial arts used by the Spartans survive aside from accounts of formations and tactics, the fight choreography led by stunt coordinator and fight choreographer Damon Caro, was a synthesis of different weapon arts with Filipino martial arts as the base. Whatever the case, I found the film rather entertaining, since I've already read Frank Miller's "300" when it was first released. The film was a visual spectacle, with director Zack Snyder faithfully reproducing the scenes in the comic book onto the big screen. Snyder did say the film is "an opera, not a documentary. That's what I say when people say it's historically inaccurate".

Regardless, Hot Toys was able to secure the movie license and produce this excellent Movie Masterpiece Series MMS114 1/6th scale King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) 12-inch collectible figure from the 2007 movie "300" and it was a gem of its time. The figure has a seamless body without any visible joint lines and yet, the figure's articulation was not necessarily limited or restricted. This figure remains a one-off release and Hot Toys has never produced another seamless figure since. I believe the actual cost of producing this figure did not justify the price it was offered at. This King Leonidas 12-inch figure remains the center-piece of my 1:6 scale "pre-WWII" collection. Not far behind is the ACI Toys 1/6th scale Warriors III Roman General (Maximus Decimus Meridius) 12-inch figure based on the character played by Russell Crowe in the 2000 epic historical drama film "Gladiator" directed by Ridley Scott.

MC Toys 1/6th scale Russian Spetsnaz Officer of FSB Alfa with Assault Shield looks really COOL

continued from previous post...

Important Note: This product is for military collectors & historic education purposes only, and it is not intended to glorify nor exploit the horrors and atrocities of war.

Spetsgruppa "A", also known as Alpha Group (a popular English name), or Alfa, whose official name is Directorate "A" of the FSB Special Purpose Center (TsSN FSB), is an elite, stand-alone sub-unit of Russia's special forces. It is a dedicated counter-terrorism task force of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), which primarily prevents and responds to violent acts in public transportation and buildings. It was created by the Soviet KGB in 1974. It is available for extended police duties, for paramilitary operations, and for covert operations, both domestically and internationally.

Several highly controversial actions made the force susceptible to criticism revolving around the loss of life among the hostages. One of these actions was the use of an unknown chemical agent to assist Alpha Group and the SOBR break the October 2002 Moscow hostage crisis, by knocking out the people inside the building. The FSB chemical attack resulted in the deaths of at least 129 hostages and serious damage to the health of many others, yet was hailed by the group's officers as their "... first successful operation for years".

Another controversy was the use of tank cannons, portable flamethrowers, and other weapons such as grenade launchers in Beslan, North Ossetia. On 3 September 2004, the local school was taken over by Chechen-led militants from Ingushetia, and was subsequently raided by the heavily armed FSB special forces of Alpha and Vympel. The Beslan siege turned out to be particularly bloody, costing the lives of more than 330 hostages, as well as at least seven Alpha members.

And just like the GL figure from your youth this ARTFX+ version looks stunning in his green and black costume with white gloves and of course the ring on his finger.

Sculpted by Atelier Bamboo, Green Lantern Classic Costume ARTFX+ stands just under 8 inches tall (1/10th scale) on his included magnetic display base with perfect stability. DAM TOYS Exhibition Exclusive Gangsters Kingdom: Side Story 1/6 Saxon 12" figure Review

My last haul for March 2015 is this DAM TOYS Exhibition Exclusive Gangsters Kingdom: Side Story 1/6th scale Saxon 12-inch action figure. This particular figure first appeared as a CICF 2014 Exclusive and I have been waiting patiently for him to come to Singapore since. I didn't want to pay the higher asking prices on the internet and managed to score him for much less - Dam Toys GKS001 Gangsters Kingdom Side Story 1/6th scale Saxon figure (CICF Expo 2014 Exclusive) was being offered by TFH at a most reasonable price so that was a pretty good deal for me.

Saxon comes with 1/6th scale head sculpt (It's a rather nice head sculpt if you like animated / caricature styled sculpts which Dam Toys have been releasing for their Gangsters Kingdom series. The HS reminds me of actor Ed Harris), 12-inch Action figure body, White long sleeve shirt, prison clothes, Leather shoes, Metal handcuffs, Metal ankle bracelets, Palm / hands x five (5)

Dam Toys Gangsters Kingdom series have been about two feuding families so far, the Spade gang versus the Diamond gang. Every member has a head sculpt resembling somebody famous (actor or footballer) but done in caricature style. Saxon stands out because he is not from either gang, hence a side story. Saxon was a partner with the K of Spades before he was betrayed and now that he's dying of cancer, has decided to take revenge before his life ends.

Incoming: Square Enix Play Arts Kai Star Wars Variant 1:7 scale Stormtrooper action figure

Square Enix has released the first official pictures of their next two Play Arts Kai Star Wars Variant Figures. We have earlier seen the Play Arts Kai Variant Darth Vader action figure (posted on my toy blog HERE), and now he is to be joined by two new re-imagined Star Wars figures, as interpreted by the designers at Square Enix. Redesigned versions of Boba Fett (see previous post) and a Stormtrooper are joining the Imperial party.

The Stormtrooper will come with interchangeable hands, a heavy blaster, a blaster pistol, a muzzle flash effect piece and a figure stand. Each is priced at 12,000 Yen (about $100 USD) and are scheduled for release in July.

The Imperial Stormtroopers are fictional soldiers from George Lucas' Star Wars universe. They are the main ground-force of the Galactic Empire, under the leadership of Emperor Palpatine and his commanders, most notably Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin. The order of battle of the Stormtrooper Corps is unspecified in the Star Wars universe, but its numbers are far fewer than those of the Imperial Army's regular troopers. Despite this, the apparently high combat effectiveness of the Stormtroopers as well as their harsh reputation serve as the main reasons for deploying them almost exclusively in most of the military engagements of the Galactic Empire.

A recurring antagonist in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi as a bounty hunter hired by Darth Vader. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones establishes his origin as an unaltered clone of the bounty hunter Jango Fett raised as his son. His aura of danger and mystery have created a cult following for the character.

Sideshow Collectibles J. Scott Campbell Spider-Man collection - Black Cat Polystone Statue

Pre-order from Sideshow Collectibles

What a tangled web love weaves!

Black Cat (Felicia Hardy) is a reformed burglar who continues to walk on the wild side as a detective and adventurer. Learning safe cracking, lock picking, and other techniques of thieves, Felicia set out stealing from others to compensate psychologically for what was stolen from her. The first night she took on the persona of the Black Cat she tried to break her father, Walter Hardy out of prison before he died. In the process, she met Spider-Man. After her father's death, she set out to become New York's premier cat burglar. However, over time, flirtations led to romance with Spider-Man, as Felicia promised to abandon her criminal activities. Spider-Man and the Black Cat often patrolled the city together, with Felicia in love with Spider-Man. She was reluctant to see Spider-Man unmasked, for fear the excitement of the mysterious romance would be lost.

Introducing a new addition to the fan-favorite J. Scott Campbell Spider-Man collection - and Peter Parker's love triangle - Sideshow Collectibles is proud to present the Black Cat Statue. Sly, sexy and surrounded by piles of glittering jewels, Felicia Hardy seductively toys with a familiar looking ball of yarn. Because you can be sure that when she's not out stealing diamonds, she's out to steal Spider-Man's heart...

DC has their Catwoman and Marvel has Black Cat. DC has Black Canary and Marvel has Black Widow. The list goes on and on... So many similar characters in the two different universes created by these separate publishing houses.
