This is Toys City upcoming "The First Set of Dark Weekend 1/6 scale Vulcan 12-inch figure" and it seems to be following the footsteps of ThreeA (3A). This Toys City 1/6 scale "Dark at the Weekend" Vulcan 12-inch figure is very similar to ThreeA (3A) figures in terms of styling (specifically the Tomorrow Kings or TKs - with the capri pants, hockey gloves and animated / stylized head sculpt). As such, I've labelled this figure as "3A" because it's 3A inspired ;p

I really like what Dam Toys are doing with their stylized Gangsters Kingdom figures (I've already collected all three Spade figures and will definitely pre-order any new ones that they are releasing). Toys City is obviously trying to get into this particular genre as well with this figure. 3 shots, 3 kills – A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, & Dangerous Days at Sea

I had posted this on my toy blog on August 4, 2009 (and it has already garnered 19,700 page views) but with the release and screening of the recent film "Captain Phillips", I think it's worth to bring it up again :) "Captain Phillips" is a 2013 American action thriller film directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi. The film tells how merchant mariner Captain Richard Phillips was taken hostage by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean during the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009 led by Abduwali Muse. The screenplay by Billy Ray is based upon the book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea (2010), by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

The film covers more on the events that occur before the SEAL Team's arrival while my toy blog post was more centered on the men who had only one chance to get everything right the first time.

Reported in The Straits Times today: A five-day hostage drama involving US ship captain Richard Phillips ended on Sunday when US Navy SEALs shot dead three of the four Somali pirates. In a surprise night-time assault on Easter Sunday, US Navy SEAL snipers shot and killed the three pirates holding US cargo ship Captain Richard Phillips (the fourth pirate only survived because he wasn't on the boat), effectively ending a five-day hostage drama.

The US operation, personally approved by US President Barack Obama, had been carried out after negotiations with the three gunmen became heated. On Sunday evening, a split-second decision was taken for the snipers to shoot down the pirates. Vice-Adm Gortney said one of the pirates had pointed an AK-47 at the back of Capt Phillips, who was tied up and in imminent danger of being killed.

According to CNN, the navy SEAL snipers were brought in earlier by chopper and dropped into the ocean behind the USS Bainbridge warship, which had rushed to the hostages' rescue. Capt Phillips had surrendered himself to the pirates to safeguard his 19 crew members when the pirates hijacked his ship, the Maersk Alabama, last Wednesday.

Review MC Toys MCF-032 1/6 scale Plainclothes Cop set (Will Smith as Del Spooner in "I, Robot")

"I, Robot" is a 2004 American dystopian science fiction action film directed by Alex Proyas. Will Smith stars in the lead role of the film as Chicago Police Detective Del Spooner. In the year 2035 a techno-phobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity.

Years prior, a car accident sent him and a 12-year-old girl into a river. He was saved from drowning by a robot, but only because it computed that he had a higher probability of survival, so despite his pleas to the robot, the girl was left to drown. The incident left him with a robotic prosthetic arm and guilt over the girl's death. Spooner now harbors a strong distrust for robots and the advancement of technology; he is certain that a human would have saved the girl if one had been in a position to make the same choice.

The Expendables 2 is a 2012 American ensemble action film directed by Simon West, written by Richard Wenk and Sylvester Stallone and based on a story by Ken Kaufman, David Agosto and Wenk. Toys City 1/6 scale World War II German camouflage sets – Italian, Autumn, oak-leaf etc

Military camouflage is part of the art of military deception. The main objective of military camouflage is to deceive the enemy as to the presence, position and intentions of military formations. Camouflage techniques include concealment, disguise, and dummies, applied to troops, vehicles, and positions.

I think among all the combat forces fighting in World War II, the German military probably has the most types of camouflage patterns than any of the other armies. The role of uniform is not only to hide each soldier, but also to identify friend from foe. Issue of the "Frogskin" uniforms to US troops in Europe during the Second World War was halted as it was too often mistaken for the German Waffen-SS uniform.

Playmates 6-inch tall Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic Collection Figures, released 2012

For 6-inch / 15cm tall action figures, these Playmates Classic Collection Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pack a whole lot of articulation :) Playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature a ball-and-socket head, ball-and-hinge shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, ball-and-hinge wrists, individually-hinged fingers, ball-and-hinge thumbs, ball-and-socket torso, ball-joint hips, swivel thighs, double-hinge knees, ball-and-socket ankles, and individually-hinged toes. That's pretty impressive! Each of them come with their own manhole cover with the TMNT logo and their individual names on it. The digits (phalanx) on each hand can move on its own which is quite cool and they can hold their weapons well.

There’s very little paint application on these figures. Almost everything on these figures are molded in their particular color, including the plastron (front shell). Having everything molded in color does give the figure a toyish look, but that’s a perfect match for the cartoonish style of these figures. Fashioned after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987 TV series which lasted for 10 seasons until 1996, the characters were light-hearted and fun to watch. 13-inch 1966 Batman Model Kit by Moebius Models now available at Sideshow Collectibles

Batman: The Movie, is a 1966 film based on the Batman television series, and the first full-length theatrical adaptation of the DC Comics character Batman. Released by 20th Century Fox, the film starred Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. Like the television series, the movie featured saturated colors, campy dialogue and special effects, and exaggeration in acting performances. Though it is often described (like many contemporary shows) as a parody of a popular comic-book character, some commentators believe that its comedy is not so tightly confined. Some commentators felt the film's depiction of the Caped Crusader "captured the feel of the contemporary comics perfectly". The film was made at a time when "the Batman of the Golden Age comics was already essentially neutered".

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (often shortened to TMNT or Ninja Turtles) are a fictional team of four teenage anthropomorphic turtles, who were trained by their anthropomorphic rat sensei in the art of ninjutsu and named after four Renaissance artists. From their home in the storm sewers of New York City, they battle petty criminals, evil overlords and alien invaders, all while remaining isolated from society-at-large. The characters appeared in comic books before their expansion to cartoons, video games, films, toys and other general merchandise. During the peak of its popularity in the late 1980s through early 1990s, the franchise gained considerable worldwide success and fame. (source: wiki)

I had read Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's self-published a single-issue comic intended to parody four of the most popular comics of the early 1980s: Marvel Comics' Daredevil and New Mutants, Dave Sim's Cerebus, and Frank Miller's Ronin. And I LIKED it :) When the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987 TV series was aired with much success, the subsequent action figure line followed, and TMNT were soon catapulted into pop culture history. At the height of the frenzy, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Turtles' likenesses could be found on a wide range of children's merchandise, from Pez dispensers to skateboards, breakfast cereal, video games, school supplies, linens, towels, cameras, and even toy shaving kits.

These are the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic Collection Figures released by Playmates which I came across as loose pieces at a flea market recently. To me, these are the most pose-able Ninja Turtle action figures ever made. I love the articulation and the quality is pretty good. I am a fan of the 1980s cartoon look so these had to be bought. While the animated TV series, which lasted for 10 seasons until 1996, was more light-hearted, the comic book series continued in a much darker and grittier tone. In 1990 a live-action feature film was released, with the turtles and Splinter being portrayed by actors in partially animatronic suits created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. The film became one of the most successful independent films, and spawned two sequels, as well as inspiring a 3D animated film set in the same continuity, which was released in 2007 under the name TMNT.

Disney Infinity "Pirates of the Caribbean" Hector Barbosa 4" / 10cm Animated Marquette Figure

Disney Infinity is an action-adventure game with physical toys, open world creation and story-driven gameplay. Characters, play-sets and other features are brought into the game using figurines and discs with the included Infinity Base.

Three figures were released for "Pirates of the Caribbean": Captain Jack Sparrow only came with the Starter Pack while Davy Jones and Barbosa were Single Character Pack / Villains Pack and Single Character Pack / Sidekicks Pack respectively.

I like the styling of these figures because they are very similar to the Gentle Giant animated maquettes of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and "Pirates of the Carribbean: At World's End" that have been released recently. While the Gentle Giant animated maquettes were too costly for my liking, these were well within my price range. Scroll down to see the pictures

Kotobukiya's upcoming Marvel Comics Captain America Avengers Now ARTFX+ 1/10 Statue

A Kotobukiya Japanese import! Marvel Comics is the next great property to get Kotobukiya’s ARTFX+ statue treatment, and so of course the first series is none other than the Avengers, specifically the characters as they appear in Marvel Now. In 2012 the comic book company relaunched several titles, shifting some characters into different books and updating some for a modern audience. More than anything, it provided a perfect jumping on point for new readers. Now the characters are brought to life as never before based on concept artwork by superstar artist Adi Granov.

Kotobukiya has fully revealed their Marvel Now Captain America ARTFX+ Statue. No additional info was released. The 1/10 scale statue will join the previously revealed 7.5-inch tall Black Widow. Hulk, Hawkeye and Thor prototypes were revealed at NYCC 2013. Iron Man has yet to be revealed. Original Effect is expanding its line pretty fast. Could it be that demand for their figures are going up and they feel they have a winning formula / product? Original Effect OE Nightmare Spider Girl has nothing to do with Marvel Comics Spider-Man. I think the only reason they came up with the name is because of the additional "eyes" on her head, giving the illusion that she has many eyes, just like a spider.

This just in: Hot Toys new Dynamic Figure Stand is specially designed for 1/6th scale collectible figures. It features a velvet covered base and includes a double sided patterned paper cover for your choice of scenario. The flexible pillar is especially ideal for showcasing figures in mid-air / flying poses.

So begs the question: Is a figure as good as it looks posed? In other words, does looking good in poses add value to a figure or not? Because if a figure looks good in the box and stays in the box, then why the need for figure display stands? Even better, why but extra figure stands? Why not include them with the figure? Hot Toys is going to sell these Dynamic Figure Stands as a means to enhance the pose-ability of 12-inch figures and increase their dynamic poses. Great for collectors who take the figures out of the box to display them but doesn't mean anything for those who prefer to keep the figures inside the box. Therein lies the other conundrum - to open the toy or to keep it inside its plastic prison?

Although listed as 1/6 scale, OE (Original Effect) 1/6th scale Reborn body (female standard) is actually 13.5 inches tall which puts them in a league of their own because almost all 1/6 scale human figures are 12 inches tall in height. I've already shown comparison pictures of the various 12-inch figure body types in the previous post. Here are some more pictures to show how much better the articulation is on the X-Series 12-inch figure body compared to other brands such as Alpha Toys B001 Narrow Shoulders Bodies which are exact copies of Hot Toys TrueType TTM bodies, only cheaper AND Kaustic Plastik muscle bodies which represent the more muscular built body types that are also available in the 1/6 scale market.

As you can see, the way the X-Series 12-inch figure bodies are designed allow them to adopt some very nice and dramatic poses other 1/6 scale bodies cannot achieve. I like to show off the bodies by making them demonstrate a high flying jumping knee muay thai style because everything has to be compact and tight. Only the X-Series 12-inch figure bodies are able to achieve this pose
