Review II: InFlames & HeadPlay 1/6 scale Metal Boss 12-inch Collectible Figure BDU Version

continued from earlier post...

Here's the InFlames and HeadPlay 1/6 scale Metal Boss 12-inch Collectible Figure BDU Version (which is none other than Metal Gear Solid 3 "Naked Snake") fully kitted out, geared up and ready to Rock & Roll! In the first review of this Metal Boss BDU figure, we got to see the box packaging and contents and now here's Naked Snake fully equipped.

InFlames and HeadPlay 1/6 scale Metal Boss (MGS3 Naked Snake) 12-inch Collectible Figure BDU Version is wearing his Black Bodysuit under the OD (Olive Drab) Jungle Fatigues (which is the tropical combat uniform issued to US troops for the war in Vietnam in the 1960s), OD STABO Rig, M-1956 Load-Carrying Equipment (LCE) with two M-14 ammo pouches (also used for 30-round M-16 magazines), two 1-quart canteens with canteen covers and the field pack / butt pack, and Cloth Jungle Boots.

Metal Boss (MGS3 Naked Snake) comes armed with Kabar Knife with Sheath, Tac Knife with Sheath, M16 Rifle with removable 30-round magazine, US SOCOM Pistol with removable magazine, silencer and light attachment which can be carried in the thigh cloth holster.

Also included: Black Shoulder Pauldrons x 2 and Black Kneepad

The M1956 Load-Bearing Equipment was originally adopted for use exclusively by the United States Army while the other services retained various combination of M1910-M1945 style equipment, and the Marine Corps developed its own 1961 pattern.

During the Vietnam War however the Army's M1956 and M1961 improvements came into use across the services and remained in widespread service with various independent components of the M1967 MLCE until being replaced by the All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment (ALICE), of a more practical nylon construction, officially beginning in 1974.

Kind of interesting that this InFlames and HeadPlay 1/6 scale Metal Boss 12-inch Collectible Figure is clad in 1960s attire, including his webbing, gear and rifle but has in his hands the MK23 USSOCOM pistol issued to special operations units in the 1990s

The Heckler & Koch MK23 is a handgun consisting of a match grade semi-automatic pistol, a laser aiming module (LAM), and suppressor. The MK23 Mod 0 was built as an "offensive" handgun for U.S. special operations forces under USSOCOM.

Historically, the use of two guns at once, one in each hand, is most associated with the American Old West, where revolvers holding only six rounds of ammunition were the highest capacity handguns available and reloading was a slow process. Being single action weapons, they needed to be cocked for each shot, so the rate of fire was also low, and while a shooter could fan his gun, this expended all his shots even faster and made him even more inaccurate than normal. Use of two guns was therefore a reasonable compromise, as this allowed one gun to be cocked as the other is being fired, in practical terms doubling the rate of fire and the available number of bullets.

A possible example of actual use of two guns firing at the same time is "Dual wield", practiced by Russian special forces. This also evolved as a method of increasing rate of fire, more in order to force the enemy to take cover than to try to accurately hit them, and was generally practiced by NKVD officers issued a pair of revolvers. However, the invention of smaller, cheaper submachineguns around the 1950s rendered the tactic largely obsolete and it fell into relative obscurity.

With modern shooting techniques, there is very little value to shooting with a weapon in each hand. Using modern full capacity firearms, a shooter can fire more shots with greater accuracy using a single gun in a two-handed grip than two guns with one-handed grips.

Close-up pictures of the InFlames & HeadPlay 1/6 scale Metal Boss head sculpt, designed and sculpted with every intention to resemble and look like "Naked Snake" from the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater award-winning stealth action video game directed by Hideo Kojima and developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan.

Here's an instance where the 1/6 manufacturer went with a cloth head band / bandana instead of a sculpted version, as seen with the MGS3 Naked Snake produced and released by Medicom Toys (pictures HERE)

A bandana or bandanna is a type of large kerchief, usually worn on the head of a person. They are often used to hold hair back and to absorb sweat, keeping it from reaching the eyes, or for practical purposes.

In Tselinoyarsk, 1964, Naked Snake dueled his former master The Boss, before being thrown into the river below the Dolinovodno bridge. Just before he fell, Snake grabbed and pulled The Boss's bandana from her head, and later used it as a sling for his broken arm.

Naked Snake, later known as Big Boss, then wore The Boss's bandana for a time. He continued wearing it during the San Hieronymo Takeover.

InFlames and HeadPlay even managed to make the creases on the bandana look like frown lines on Naked Snake's face

Here are some close-up shots / pictures of the InFlames and HeadPlay 1/6 scale Metal Boss 12-inch Collectible Figure BDU Version wearing the OD (Olive Drab) Jungle Fatigues (which is the tropical combat uniform issued to US troops for the war in Vietnam in the 1960s), OD STABO Rig, M-1956 Load-Carrying Equipment (LCE) with two M-14 ammo pouches (also used for 30-round M-16 magazines), two 1-quart canteens with canteen covers and the field pack / butt pack. All these are worn over the Black Bodysuit.

MGS3 uniforms: Olive Drab – The basic uncamouflaged uniform. It is the standard uniform for GIs. It provides cover in urban areas as well as while sneaking in grass areas. The uniform does not provide excellent camouflage though, according to Sigint and The Boss. The player gets the camouflage at the beginning of the game. A similar uniform appears in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker called Jungle Fatigues.

Olive Drab Uniform description in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – "Olive Drab. Commonly known as OD. A single-color battle uniform for general infantry use. Does not provide much camouflage."

The XM16E1 in the game has three firing options: semi-auto, three round burst, and full-auto, and can also be fitted with a suppressor. (Thanks to the zoom when aiming through the iron sights, it can act as a suppressed "sniping" rifle.) It fires 5.56x45mm rounds from a 20 round magazine. It has been modified by a gunsmith with camouflage tape and paint making it more suitable for jungle combat.

In the early 1960s, the U.S. Air Force's rifle, the M16, and the Army's XM16E1, were the first versions of the M16 rifle fielded. Soon the U.S. Army standardized an upgrade of the XM16E1 as the M16A1 rifle, an M16 with a forward assist feature and other improvements requested by the Army.

On May 1, 1996, the first HK MK 23 pistols were delivered to the U.S. Special Operations Command for operational deployment, making the MK 23 the first caliber .45 ACP pistol to enter American military service since the venerable Government Model 1911A1.

To meet the reliability requirement, the pistol had to demonstrate a minimum of 2,000 mean rounds between stoppages (MRBS) with both M1911 ball and +P ammunition. All pistols exceeded the 2000 MRBS with an average of 6000 MRBS. In more than 450 accuracy test firings from a precision firing fixture at 25 meters, MK 23 pistols far exceeded the government requirement, averaging 1.44 inches, with 65 groups of less than one inch. There were four groups of .5 inches, with 5 rounds going through the same hole!

The KA-BAR fighting / combat knife was first issued by the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II (November 1942). The knives were made by a number of manufacturers and featured a 7-inch black coated 1095 carbon steel blade with a leather ridged handle and a leather sheath.

ALex,
btw, do you know the website for this company? Interested to know their incoming products. The MSG lines looks very good indeed.

hi ethan, i don't think this company has a website because they don't want to be tracked and sued for copyright infringements. this figure was not as readily available via the normal channels because the bigger boys don't want to risk legal actions

Ahh..no wonder. I bet it will definitely get sued :) The resemblance is so good..maybe thinking of getting this version that waiting for HT.
