Though its terrorist threat level remains "moderate", Hong Kong is, however, not immune to terrorist attacks. It is therefore prudent for the Hong Kong Police Force to ensure that adequate and proactive measures are in place. The Force has established a Counter Terrorism Response Unit (CTRU) in a bid to maintain adequate precautionary measures, strengthen security and prepare defensive strategies to prevent terrorist related activities in Hong Kong.
"CTRU members are highly trained to handle specific CT related incidents in Hong Kong, and will provide high profile deterrent patrols throughout Hong Kong. During times of heightened threat, they will be additionally tasked to handle bomb threats, escort explosives or CBRN materials and provide support to other specialist units. There is no special unit in the Force to solely focus on counter terrorism preventative operational deployments outside the Airport. CTRU is the newly established unit specifically for this kind of work," said Superintendent Barry Smith, who was charged with establishment of the new unit.

Modeling Toys 1/6th scale Military Series - S.D.U. Special Duties Unit 12-inch figure Preview Pics
The SDU was established in 1974 by the British Hong Kong Government in response to the ever-increasing threat of international terrorism. The SDU, consisting of ten odd members, used existing police weaponry and devised their own tactics. In early 1978, the British Special Air Service sent an advisory team to Hong Kong, which was initially to evaluate the SDU and subsequently trained two land assault teams resulting in considerable changes to SDU equipment and tactics. In 1982, the British Special Boat Service sent an advisory team to Hong Kong to establish a water assault team including training in military diving. The water assault team was later disbanded in 2000, with the assaults teams now integrated as new training standards required all officers to be equally trained and proficient in maritime operations.
After the handover of Hong Kong’s sovereignty from Britain to China in 1997, the SDU not only continues its training exchanges with many European, North American, and Asian police tactical units and military special forces units, but has also begun to form closer ties with Mainland China.

It's been a while since a 1:6 scale company / manufacturer decided to produce and release a 12-inch SDU (Special Duties Unit) Assault Team Member. It was many years ago back in 1999 that Dragon Models Limited (DML) released the first 1:6 scale SDU Assault Team Leader 12-inch action figure - reviewed on my toy blog HERE followed by the entire team (see pictures HERE). Hot Toys also released SDU figures back in 2003 - see my action figure review HERE and HERE.

1/6 scale S.W.A.T. 12-inch Action Figures - We really need more of them to form a bigger team!
Remember when 1/6 scale Norman Stansfield called for "EVERYONE"? See my earlier post HERE of bad cop Stansfield and good cop of Gotham City Police Department Jim Gordon with a bunch of 12-inch S.W.A.T. figures. Well, here's "everyone" that were gathered for that particular toy blog post i.e. some of the 1/6 scale S.W.A.T. 12-inch figures I had assembled for the photo shoot :)
S.W.A.T. (special weapons and tactics) teams are elite tactical units found in various law enforcement agencies trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside of the abilities of regular officers. SWAT team members' duties include: performing hostage rescues and counter-terrorism operations; serving high risk arrest and search warrants; subduing barricaded suspects; and engaging heavily-armed criminals. They are often equipped with specialized firearms including submachine guns, assault rifles, breaching shotguns, riot control agents, stun grenades, and sniper rifles. They have specialized equipment including heavy body armor, ballistic shields, entry tools, armored vehicles, advanced night vision optics, and motion detectors for covertly determining the positions of hostages or hostage takers inside enclosed structures.
If you didn't manage to get a good look at who's who that were posing for pictures because the focus was on the two main cops, here's your chance to see the nine S.W.A.T. action figures I picked for the shoot. There are more but the camera angle can only take in that much ;p Scroll down to see who they are.

Hot Toys 1/6 SDU 12-inch Assaulter Figure Redo
Continued from the previous post...
This is the Hot Toys 1/6 scale SDU (Hong Kong's Special Duties Unit) Assaulter 12-inch figure re-done! If you have been following my entries, you'll know that the original Hot Toys first generation 12-inch muscle body had cracked and broke apart after taking a fall recently (see previous post). No worries, I just have to replace that old crappy body with a newer much improved version :)
This revised version of the Hot Toys 1/6 SDU 12-inch Assaulter Figure is much more articulated and pose-able than the original version which suffered from stiff limbs due to the bulky muscle mass made of rubber encased over the metal wire armature.

Hot Toys SDU all cracked up: Peril of seamless muscle bodies
Remember my concerns about CMToys' Rome Gladiator "Spartacus" 1/6 scale figure with the new 12-inch muscle body (see my post HERE)? How rubberized bodies are prone to tearing over time and my issue with a no-name start-up company selling an unproven, untested rubber seamless body?
My Hot Toys 1/6 scale SDU (Hong Kong's Special Duties Unit) Assaulter 12-inch figure took a tumble the other day (more like a dive!) :( You know what they say, "The higher they are, the harder they fall!" This figure was perched on the highest rung of my display cabinet and when I opened the cabinet door, it just fell head first and broke both its hands. This was most likely due to the top heavy body and the figure trying to break its fall with its hands but they just couldn't support the BIG chest that comes as part of Hot Toys first generation 12-inch muscle body. I was surprised the rubberized muscle body didn't bounce right back up haha. Of course this could have been prevented if it was on a figure stand but I just prefer displaying my figures without them as it adds to the realism. A lot of my 1/6 scale 12-inch figures has been standing for more then 15 years and they have never complained that they are tired nor decide to fall over in protest. All except this particular figure.
Just like Humpty Dumpty, you can't put him back together again BUT all the parts and accessories can still be salvaged and re-used to kitbash another SDU 12-inch figure. Amazingly there aren't any other major damage to the gear and accessories apart from the body. This 12-inch muscle body has already suffered cracks to its arms for some time. This is a major problem with rubberized muscle bodies. Scroll down to see more...

Very Hot 12-inch SDU series Preview
The Special Duties Unit (Abbreviation: SDU; Chinese: 特別任務連, nicknamed Flying Tigers 飛虎隊) is an elite paramilitary police Special Forces unit of the Hong Kong Police. Established in July 1974, it is a sub-division of the Police Tactical Unit (PTU). Its primary functions include counter-terrorism, anti-narcotic raids, hostage rescue and other crimes (usually involving firearms) which are deemed too dangerous for local police to handle. The unit holds regular training exercises with similar units from around the world and used to be trained by the British SAS before the handover of Hong Kong to China.
Very Hot will be releasing a three-figure SDU series for those who'd missed out on the earlier releases due to joining the 1/6 hobby after all these had been snapped up by eager new collectors.

1/6 scale Adidas Superstar
From 1/6 scale sharks (see entry here and here) to 1/6 scale Adidas.
Two of the earlier pairs of 1/6 Adidas Superstar that were released were worn by 1/6 scale 12-inch Hong Kong Special Duties Unit (SDU) members. They came with Hot Toys SDU Assaulter and Breacher in 2003. Although they are usually attired in their tactical suits, in the movie "Final Option (1994)", Michael Wong as LT Stone Wong (Dragon's LT Wong posted here) orders his Unit to discard their suits in place of civies so that they can identify who the bad guys were as they too wore SDU suits to confuse the unit in the ultimate battle.
As usual, Hot Toys SDU team came heavily decked out with tons of equipment and accessories - value for money!
Now a comparison of 1/6 scale Adidas Superstar. The pair of 1/6 scale white/black Adidas Superstar was made available thanks to Shaun who bought it during his recent trip to Hong Kong and there's a whole post/entry about the sneakers here.
Hot Toys Adidas on the left and genuine Adidas licensed item on the right
The character wearing the 1/6 Adidas Superstar is Kakugo from Apocalypse Zero (覚悟のススメ Kakugo no Susume), a manga series written and illustrated by Takayuki Yamaguchi, and adapted into a two-part original video animation (OVA) in 1996. The basic plot is that Kakugo and Harara are siblings trained to fight the monsters roaming in post-apocalyptic Tokyo in the 21st century. To aid them, Kakugo and Harara were entrusted with "Zero armors", exo-skeletons forged from the souls of deceased warriors. After Harara succumbs to the evil within the armor, it is up to Kakugo to defeat his sibling. I really dig the "Zero armor" and bought the Medicom Apocalypse Zero "Kyoka Gai Kokaku Zero" figure without even finding out who the character was, good or bad (see my post of the full armored figure here)
Close-up of Kakugo's head sculpt

If you are thinking of watching the Apocalypse Zero OVA, John Oppliger (editor and consultant of AnimeNation, an anime merchandise and production distributor) called the Apocalypse Zero OVA "the most viscerally violent and gruesome anime" he has seen and "arguably the most grotesque anime ever made". Consider yourself warned!

"Kubrick"-type SDU
When Medicom started with Kubrick in 2000, Dragon also came out with their own similar line of figures to compete. Whilst Kubrick started with anime and manga related figures, Dragon based theirs on their 1:6 figures. Dragon did both WWII Germans and their ever popular SDU line. This is the result.

The figures were based on actual 1:6 figures produced by Dragon. Guess who won this 6cm/2.5" figure war?

SDU Assault Team Leader
Michael Chan was the first SDU figure by Dragon in 1999 and he started a whole avalanche of SDU figures by various 1:6 companies, followed by many similar themed figures - all the special force operators carrying MP5s and wearing CT gear. Last year was all about PMCs - everybody was churning them out, hoping to catch the bandwagon and rake in the dough.

Medicom Tokyo Tribe 2 (Jada Kins, Kai, Merra, Iwao, another Merra) plus one outsider
LT Stone Wong, SDU leader (Final Option, 1994)
Played by Michael Wong, LT Stone Wong is the reason why the SDU is running around in civies instead of their tactical suits. In the movie, the perpetrators have equipped themselves with more powerful weapons and dressed themselves in SDU tactical suits to confuse the Unit when they are attacked. To counter this, Stone orders his Unit to discard their suits so that they can identify who the perpetrators were.
Before Hot Toys' muscle bodies, Dragon experimented with this "rubber skin", a sleeve which is slipped over the original body. This was so that the joints would not be seen, thus giving the bodies a more realistic look. Unfortunately, the rubber skin folds at all the wrong places and looks anatomically wrong.
