This Soviet Female Sniper 12-inch figure just reminds me of the 2001 film "Enemy at the Gates". The film's title is taken from William Craig's 1973 nonfiction book "Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad", which describes the events surrounding the Battle of Stalingrad in the winter of 1942/43. While fictional, the film is loosely based on war stories told by Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev. In the sniper division, Vasily Zaytsev (Jude Law) meets and falls in love with Tania (Rachel Weisz), a citizen of Stalingrad who has become a Private in the local militia.

Square Enix Play Arts Kai Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – Burning Man action figure

According to Metal Gear Wiki: Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin (Russian: Евгений Борисович Волгин), also known as Thunderbolt, was a Stalinist GRU colonel, as well as the strategic operations commander of the Soviet Union, who attempted to seize control of the Soviet Union by overthrowing Nikita Khrushchev and installing Leonid Brezhnev and Alexei Kosygin in his place. Volgin was an extremely strong man, even for his large size. He combined his tremendous strength and skills with unexplained ability of electrical manipulation, gaining him the nickname "Thunderbolt" in the West.

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, an apparition appears that bears some resemblance to a demonic version of the then-long deceased Volgin. He wears a bandolier of bullets on his chest and a tattered suit very similar to the ones worn by Volgin in the latter stages of Operation Snake Eater (when his coat had been removed). The positioning of the bullets between his knuckles also confirms The Burning Man's identity.

This will be Square Enix Play Arts Kai 1/7th scale Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – Burning Man action figure. The beautifully sculpted figure is based on a character from the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid V video game, which is due in September. The character is seen in the trailer for the game. The Burning Man includes pieces to display him naturally, or as if he is on fire. It includes swappable chest pieces, fire effects, multiple hands, and a figure stand. This figure certainly has a nice vibe to it. I don't particularly like the human heads sculpted by the Square Enix sculptors for their Play Arts Kai series which is why I stayed away from the line for so long but the figures with masks / helmets look very good.

Spetsgruppa "A", also known as Alpha Group (a popular English name), or Alfa, whose official name is Directorate "A" of the FSB Special Purpose Center (TsSN FSB), is an elite, stand-alone sub-unit of Russia's special forces. It is a dedicated counter-terrorism task force of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), which primarily prevents and responds to violent acts in public transportation and buildings. It was created by the Soviet KGB in 1974. It is available for extended police duties, for paramilitary operations, and for covert operations, both domestically and internationally.

Several highly controversial actions made the force susceptible to criticism revolving around the loss of life among the hostages. One of these actions was the use of an unknown chemical agent to assist Alpha Group and the SOBR break the October 2002 Moscow hostage crisis, by knocking out the people inside the building. The FSB chemical attack resulted in the deaths of at least 129 hostages and serious damage to the health of many others, yet was hailed by the group's officers as their "... first successful operation for years".

Another controversy was the use of tank cannons, portable flamethrowers, and other weapons such as grenade launchers in Beslan, North Ossetia. On 3 September 2004, the local school was taken over by Chechen-led militants from Ingushetia, and was subsequently raided by the heavily armed FSB special forces of Alpha and Vympel. The Beslan siege turned out to be particularly bloody, costing the lives of more than 330 hostages, as well as at least seven Alpha members.

OMON ((Russian: ОМОН—Отряд мобильный особого назначения, Otryad Mobilny Osobogo Naznacheniya, Special Purpose Mobile Unit) originated in 1979, when the first Soviet SWAT-like police unit was founded in preparation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow to ensure that there were no terrorist incidents like the Munich massacre during the 1972 Summer Olympics. Subsequently, the unit was to be utilized in emergencies such as high-risk arrests, hostage crises and acts of terror.

The current OMON system is the successor of that group and was founded on October 3, 1988 as the Militsiya Squad of Special Assignment, initially in Moscow. Special police detachments were often manned by former soldiers of the Soviet Army and veterans of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. OMON units were used as riot police to control and stop demonstrations and hooliganism, as well as to respond to emergency situations involving violent crime. The units later took on a wider range of police duties, including cordon and street patrol actions, and even paramilitary and military-style operations.

The Beslan school hostage crisis (also referred to as the Beslan school siege or Beslan massacre) started on 1 September 2004, lasted three days and involved the capture of over 1,100 people as hostages (including 777 children), ending with the death of 385 people.

The attack on the school took place on 1 September—the traditional start of the Russian school year, referred to as "First Bell" or Knowledge Day. A security cordon was soon established around the school, consisting of the Russian police (militsiya), Internal Troops, and Russian Army forces; spetsnaz, including the elite Alpha and Vega units of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB); and the OMON special units of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD).

The Russian invasion continues... the 1/6 scale kind, that is. Posting pictures of military figures does not mean I condone war of any kind. It's been a while since I've tied the camouflage strips / strings onto a ghillie suit. This year 2014 will be remembered as the year of the Russians for 12-inch military figure collectors because of the sudden influx of 1/6 scale Russian figures being released. After a long drought of zero Russian figures, 1/6 scale toy manufacturers have decided to flood the market with a whole slew of Russian soldiers of every type and kind imaginable and those starved of Russian figures suddenly find themselves inundated with so many choices and options to choose from. The Invasion of Dagestan, also known as the War in Dagestan, began when the Chechnya-based Islamic International Brigade (IIB), an Islamist militia led by warlords Shamil Basayev and Ibn al-Khattab, invaded the neighboring Russian republic of Dagestan on 2 August 1999, in support of the Shura of Dagestan separatist rebels. Despite the initial poor showing of the government forces (for example, military helicopters were hit by anti-tank guided missiles during a rebel raid on the Botlikh airfield), Moscow and Makhachkala were able to put together an impressive fighting force. For instance, the light infantry units were partially drawn from the Spetsnaz, paratroopers and naval infantry, crucial to mountain and counter-insurgency warfare.

The Russian Airborne Troops or VDV (from "Vozdushno-desantnye voyska", Russian: Воздушно-десантные войска, ВДВ; Air-landing Forces) is a military branch of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. They are an elite force, on par with the Strategic Rocket Forces and the Russian Space Forces. First formed before World War II, the force undertook two significant airborne operations and a number of smaller jumps during the war and for many years after 1945 was the largest airborne force in the world. The force was split after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, losing divisions to Belarus and Ukraine, and has been reduced in size.

1/6 scale Russian troops have been appearing on the 12-inch figure market of late. Spetsgruppa "B" (Cyrillic for V), often referred to as Vympel (pennant in Russian, originated from Dutch wimpel, and having the same meaning), but also known as KGB Directorate "B" , Vega Group is an elite Russian spetsnaz unit under the command of the FSB.

Vympel is the sister unit of Spetsgruppa "A"(Alpha Group), an KGB/FSB unit, specialised in counter-terrorism missions and covert operations. Vympel training is the same as Alpha Group. All Vympel operatives are trained in tactical operations, parachuting, driving various vehicles, trained in methods of intelligence gathering, and other specialized skills.

Vympel (i.e. the Directorate "V" of the TsSN FSB) is still a classified and secretive unit. It took part in Russia's Chechen campaigns and in storming of the Supreme Soviet building during the 1993 Russian constitutional crisis. Little is known about its current operations and activities, the exception being the capture of the Chechen militant leader Salman Raduyev in March 2000 and the assault on the school in Beslan in September 2004.

Spetsnaz is an umbrella term for special forces in Russian; its literal meaning is "special purpose forces". Historically, the term referred to special military units controlled by the military intelligence service GRU (Spetsnaz GRU). It also describes special purpose units, or task forces, of other ministries (such as the Ministry of Emergency Situations' special rescue unit) in post-Soviet countries. (source: wiki)

The Center of Special Operations of the FSB (CSN FSB, центр специального назначения ФСБ) is officially tasked with combating terrorism and protecting the constitutional order of the Russian Federation. The CSN FSB consists of three operative divisions: Department A (Spetsgruppa Alfa), Department V (Spetsgruppa Vympel) and the Special Purpose Service.

Alpha Group is a counter-terrorist unit created in 1974. It is a professional unit, consisting of about 700 operators and support personnel in five operational detachments. Most are stationed in Moscow, with the remainder in three other cities: Krasnodar, Yekaterinburg and Khabarovsk. All Alpha operators undergo airborne, mountain and counter-sabotage dive training.
