VTS 1/6 Dark Soldier 12" Figure or Karl Urban as SSGgt John "Reaper" Grimm in Doom Review 2

continued from previous post...

Having reviewed the box packaging and contents in the previous post, here's VTS 1/6th scale Dark Soldier 12-inch Figure (which seems to be very much inspired by Karl Urban as John "Reaper" Grimm in the 2005 sci-fi horror film "Doom" based loosely on the video game series of the same name) all suited and geared up and ready for some hard-hitting action :)

I always like to see how different movie producers / directors portray soldiers fighting in the future and even though this figure and the movie which inspired it is based on a video game, it's still nice to see how the future soldier is kitted out for battle. Unlike the United States Colonial Marine Corps (USCMC) or USCM, commonly known as the Colonial Marines, from the 1986 movie "Aliens", these Rapid Response Tactical Squad (RRTS) Marines have less gear and armor. You can check out my earlier post HERE of Hot Toys 1/6 scale USCM CPL Hicks & PFC Vasquez for comparison pictures :) scroll down to see more pictures of this fully equipped VTS 1/6th scale Dark Soldier 12-inch Figure

VTS VM-007 1/6th scale Dark Soldier 12-inch Figure aka Karl Urban as Staff Sergeant John "Reaper" Grimm comes with 1/6th scale real-like head sculpt, 12-inch figure body with long-sleeved T-shirt (black), combat suit, tactical vest, universal pouch (small), magazine pouch, universal pouch (large), ammo pouch, tactical belt, elbow pads (one pair), knee pads (one pair), half-finger tactical gloves (one pair), walkie-talkie radio, combat knife with scabbard, drop-leg holster, pistol, sci-fi assault rifle, rifle sling, radio communications headset, combat boots (one pair)

In my haste to put this figure together, I almost forgot the radio communications headset which has a long name but is actually rather small ;p don't throw away the box until you have removed everything.

No assembly instructions are provided so you just have to base it on the preview pictures which VTS had released before this figure actually shipped. I had posted them earlier HERE

There are a lot of pouches on the vest but only one rifle magazine is provided. You can see the weapon with magazine removed in my previous post HERE

In the movie, the year is 2046 and man has already landed on Mars and established a research facility there but they are still using bullets to kill aliens.

Besides the souped up Heckler & Koch G36 rifle made to look futuristic and high tech, some of the marines including Mac (Yao Chin), Duke (Razaaq Adoti) and Reaper (Karl Urban) use H&K USP handguns with stainless-steel barrels as their sidearms.

In this side profile picture of the VTS 1/6 scale Dark Soldier 12-inch figure, you can see both weapons at his side, with the pistol holstered in a drop-down carrier

The only thing that says this is a futuristic trooper is the gun / rifle. Everything else looks rather conventional and very present-day.

Even present day soldiers don't wear half-finger tactical gloves because they don't offer as much protection ;p

Here are some close-up shots / pictures of the VTS Dark Soldier 1/6th scale real-like head sculpt that was meant to resemble Karl Urban as Staff Sergeant John "Reaper" Grimm in the movie

Karl-Heinz Urban (born 1972) is a New Zealand actor best known for playing Éomer in the second and third installments of Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. He is also known for playing Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in "Star Trek", "Star Trek Into Darkness", Caesar on "Xena: Warrior Princess", Vaako in "The Chronicles of Riddick" and Judge Dredd in the 2012 film "Dredd".

From certain angles you can tell it's Karl Urban but for the most part, the likeness is off, perhaps for legal reasons such as copyright infringement.

Here's a screen grab of Karl Urban as John "Reaper" Grimm in Doom

And here's the VTS 1/6th scale Dark Soldier 12" Figure set in the same position / pose for comparison. I think the eyes are set too deep into the face. The real actor doesn't have such deep set eyes on his face as the 12-inch figure.

The futuristic assault rifle used in the film is a visually modified Heckler & Koch G36 rifle carried by Sarge (Dwayne Johnson), Reaper (Karl Urban), Portman (Richard Brake) and Duke (Razaaq Adoti). Mac (Yao Chin) also carries what appears to be one of these rifles with some sort of grenade launcher attachment. According to the ammo counters, the beefed-up box magazines are supposed to hold 65 rounds.

Here's a close-up picture of the futuristic sci-fi rifle seen in the movie "Doom" and reproduced very nicely to scale here by VTS

I like that there are fewer pieces of equipment; I would not have to find new homes for them. I look forward to finding him reduced and as a nude figure.

(Am ... so that I can buy him for a lower cost, of course ;-D)
