Review II: Hot Toys "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" 1/6th scale Kylo Ren Collectible Figure

continued from previous toy blog post...

Kylo Ren is the most gifted apprentice of Supreme Leader Snoke, a mysterious figure steeped in Dark Side knowledge who commands the First Order from a distance. The dark side flows through Kylo Ren, making him an almost unstoppable force on the field of battle. His reflexes and telekinetic defences are immense - he is able to stop an incoming blaster bolt in midair and hold it in place for an extended period of time before releasing it. He is also a master of telepathic intrusion, using the ability to coerce or torment his prisoners into revealing secret information.

Kylo Ren's unusual lightsaber is an ancient design, dating back thousands of years to the Great Scourge of Malachor. The crossguard blades, or quillons, are tributaries of the primary central blade, all spawning from a cracked kyber crystal that is the cause of their ragged, unstable appearance. An array of focusing crystal activators split the plasma stream into perpendicular blade energy channels, creating the quillons. The emitter shrouds on the crossguard protects the bearer's hand from the smaller blades.

This is my second-part action figure review of the Hot Toys MMS320 Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens 1/6th scale Kylo Ren Collectible Figure which comes with Kylo Ren's unique lightsaber and a LED-light up lightsaber right arm (batteries included). The light-up arm allows for the lightsaber to be lighted up in a bright red glow which can be best seen and captured when the figure is placed in a darker background - see the pictures below. Hot Toys also included five extra interchangeable gloved hands, including a gesturing left palm which can be used to show Kylo Ren using the Force.

Kylo Ren's outfit / costume consists of a black basket weave pattern top coat, a black mid coat with accordion sleeves, black short under-tunic, black long under-tunic, pair of black pants, black belt and black boots. He wore a mask and helmet that altered his voice and adds to his imposing demeanour.

A close-up view of Kylo Ren's lightsaber. Though Kylo's weapon evokes an ancient feel, its components are modern. Its crude appearance suggests construction by an inexperienced hand. The stressed crystal barely contains the power of the weapon, necessitating lateral plasma vents that become the crossguard quillons.

In the picture below, the lightsaber is lighted up but the effect is not so obvious. The next few pictures show off the lighted plasma blades better. The effect is nice and I'm really glad that we finally have a 1:6 scale lighted lightsaber!

From Ted Menten:
Alex,

Great shots of the light sword "in the dark" -- perfect balance of ambient light and the light from the sword.
BRAVO!
