Batman first appeared in the pages of Detective Comics #27 which was sold for 10 cents. By the 1940s, Batman was a big player in comics and Alfred Pennyworth, The Batsignal, The Batmobile and the Batcave were introduced, as were villains like Dr Hugo Strange and The Joker.
In the 1950s, Batman gradually becomes more science fiction oriented as he fought aliens from outer space. This era showed a more 'sunnier' Batman during the postwar years to reflect the golden age of the 50s. Accusations of Batman being gay rose at this time, and rumored Batman and Robin as romantic lovers LOL.

1960s Batman was portrayed by Adam West on TV with lots of camp thrown in, including shark repellent spray cans and giant cherry bombs. Batman returned to the dark side in the 1970s and then Batman exploded on the big screen in a big way with the Tim Burton directed 1989 Batman film which broke several box office records, grossing over 400 million. Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) was inspired by the Tim Burton film and maintained the dark tone set by Burton to great success. Then came Batman Forever in 1995 by Joel Schumacher to mixed reviews. Schumacher then almost kills the Batman film franchise with the 1997 Batman and Robin with what is considered one of the worst superhero films of all time. The bat nipples didn't help!
Batman gets rebooted in 2005 with Batman Begins by Christopher Nolan. This was followed by The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. Batman has been restored to its rightful place. Now we wait with bated breath for "Superman vs Batman: Dawn of Justice"
