AVATAR Highest Grossing Film Of All Time

Director James Cameron's AVATAR was released in movie theatres on December 18, 2009 and has re-written the box office record books, earning more than US$2 billion since its opening to become the highest grossing film of all time, finally surpassing his own Titanic in 1997. It was made with a reported budget of US$500 million but that seems like small change now. It was also nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (82nd Academy Awards), having already won Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Director at the 67th Golden Globe Awards.

And we 1:6 collectors are left wanting. Why isn't there any 1:6 manufacturer offering us articulated costumed figures of the characters from the movie? I'll admit the alien Na'vi race will be hard to produce in 1:6 scale since they are ten-foot tall blue-skinned humanoid creatures. But I would like me some 12-inch tall human figures of Michelle Rodriguez as Trudy Chacón (a Marine combat pilot assigned to support the Avatar Program) and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, the head of the mining operation's security detail.

Hot Toys already announced they were going to make products from Avatar. If you go to their web site, Avatar is listed under their acquired licenses.

thanks Jason :) my concern is that Hot Toys may have the license but they may not embark on 1:6 scale figures. Case in point: 1/16 scale Matrix Sentinel by Hot Toys. Whatever happened to Neo & all the interesting characters?

This time HT and Sideshow are competing instead of collaborating. Wait and see whether HT will release the same. It may be likely that HT will have a breakthrough by producing the blue giant creatures. The price of this Sideshow may exceed US$1,200.

It is entirely possible that Hot Toys could do with Avatar what they did with The Matrix, but consider that The Sentinel is a very iconic large-scale character from The Matrix movies. There really isn't anything like that in Avatar. All the vehicles and large creatures in Avatar aren't really interesting to have on their own (even the AMP suit). There's nothing in Avatar that, if Hot Toys made a 1/16 scale of it, would sell very well (again, even the AMP suit).

I'm sure Hot Toys will do 1/6 figures from Avatar.

In any case, it's exciting to know Hot Toys even has the license.

Alex - in HT's announcment re: Avatar, IM2, Prince of Persia, Clash of the Titans, etc., they specifically stated the licenses were for 1/6. Fingers crossed.

Btw, love your site and blog.

Thanks for sharing, Jason, Philip, I certainly look forward to seeing the 1/6 figures from Hot Toys.

Also thanks for the compliments Philip, I'm glad that sharing my Passion (Obsession to some) has connected me to so many like-minded people all over the globe.

I agree. Manufacturers are definitely dropping the ball when it comes to producing Avatar Action Figures. I like what is on the market, but they could be doing so much more. Definitely need some 12 inch figures. I like them better myself also.
